The IIMA Story
How was IIMA born? Who were the key players? What has made it synonymous to success? Established in 1961, IIMA is the first Indian business school to achieve international recognition. In 2002, Economist Intelligence Unit’s list declared IIMA as the most selective management school in the world. And in 2011, IIMA has been ranked number 7 in Financial Times (FT)’s global ranking of Masters in Management Programme. Prof. V L Mote was an extraordinary academician, who left a lasting impression on generations of participants of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, Post Graduate Programme and Management Development Programme. He is also remembered by executives in several organizations that benefitted from his consulting assistance. With an M.Sc. degree in Mathematics from Bombay University and a PhD in Statistics from the University of North Carolina, USA, he began his academic career as Assistant Professor at the University of Florida, USA. This was followed by a position at Calico Mills, after which he was invited by Dr Vikram Sarabhai to join IIMA in 1962 where he became the first Chairman of the PGP, where he remained till his retirement in 1993. This book is a tribute to Professor VL Mote, with a collection of articles, messages and eulogies from his peers, colleagues, students and family members.
Applied Ethnomusicology in Nepal. Preserving Traditional Music in South Asia
What are the implications of establishing a university department for ethnomusicology ``in the field''? How does this affect not only the local music culture but also the development of ethnomusicology? What are the advantages/disadvantages of an ethnomusicology curriculum giving as much importance to practical training in music as to theory classes? At Kathmandu University's Department of Music in Bhaktapur, ethnomusicologists and professional musicians together support the sustainability of traditional music in Nepal by developing approaches that explore the space between ``keeping it as it is'' (conservation) and ``letting it disappear'' (non-interference). This book examines these efforts through an analysis of ethnomusicological research and teaching and the work of professional musicians involved in the development of new forms of popular music. It offers unique insights into a decades-spanning project of applied ethnomusicology, while also contributing to the discourse about musical sustainability and the localisation and practical application of ethnomusicology in South Asia and beyond.
