This report makes an appraisal of the geopolitical, geostrategic and geoeconomic dimensions of the linkages between India’s east coast and the ‘extended Bay’—Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia—with respect to port logistics, trade interactions, disaster management and strategic convergences. The aim of this study is three-fold: a) to examine the existing nature of port and commercial linkages between India and the aforesaid littorals and explore how these linkages can be strengthened; b) to examine the vulnerabilities of the littorals in terms of natural calamities and to analyse how and to what extent humanitarian assistance and disaster management can be regionally governed; and c) to explore the Bay of Bengal as a maritime space to understand the geostrategic construct of Indo-Pacific.

Ties between India and Australia are wide-ranging: from geostrategic cooperation and trade, to soft power mechanisms such as cricket and tourism. This paper makes a case for improving bilateral relations between New Delhi and Canberra. While there are substantial opportunities for trade and investment flows between the two countries, the engagements have been largely underdeveloped over the years. The immense scope of complementarities between the two nations can serve as a driver for boosting bilateral trade and information flow. Moreover, the trilateral network between India and Australia, and the ASEAN, is also brimming with potential in the Indo-Pacific region. Finally, the global attention towards digital economics, along with technological innovation in both countries, especially blockchain technology, is poised to enhance their maritime connectivity and ease of doing business.

A shift in the notion of 'security' since the end of the Cold War resulted in the accommodation of non-military--thereby, 'non- traditional'--threats to security. Non-Traditional Security (NTS) comprises a gamut of human security concerns such as climate change, shortage of food and resources such as energy, infectious diseases, natural disasters, transnational crime, human and drug trafficking, and mass migration. This is what analysts refer to as the human security-development nexus. These NTS areas have typically fallen outside the purview of discussions on more "immediate" threats to national security such as, for instance, territorial encroachment. Addressing these challenges also often calls for the involvement of transnational actors

The Eastern Corridor is a crucial highway for global trade flows, where any disruption could severely affect the global economy. The route comprises some of the world’s most vulnerable Sea Lanes of Communication (SCLOs), with potential flashpoints such as the South China Sea. For years, these SLOCs have been characterised by tensions in South Asia and Southeast Asia; the more recent years are seeing a heightening of both intent and capacity for contravention of maritime stability. It is imperative to explore the gaps in the legal framework governing maritime security, and assess the potential risks of disruption not only in the economy but also in the rules-based global order. This paper studies the interface between established maritime legal frameworks and spatial politics in the Eastern Corridor.

The Making of a Global Bharat

The Making of a Global Bharat

" An ambitious and articulate Bharat is reimagining its global engagement at a time when cracks are appearing in the post-1945 world order. A host of challenges—such as the rise of multipolarity, the onset of deglobalisation, the advent of a technological revolution, the deepening polarisation between the East and the West, and the divide between the Global North and South—are upending the established order that was built on a foundation of hope and cooperation. Old ideas and institutions can no longer hold the weight of our problems, even as assumptions of the past need a radical rethink. This issue of the GP-ORF Series, titled The Making of a Global Bharat, celebrates India’s global ...

WORLD POLITICS IN NEW NORMAL AND INDIA’S ASCENDANCY

The COVID-19 pandemic is posing hitherto the toughest challenge for humanity in the 21st century. Already with more than 63 million people in 218 countries around the world have infected by the pervasive conflagration of the contagion, the disease has unleashed system-altering effects. Obviously, it was a new situation for all of us when we saw not only differential response in different regions and on the part of different nation-states to cope with this humongous crisis but also the distribution of power was undergoing a sea change that required a new analysis. In the case of India we witnessed her excellent outreach in terms of medical diplomacy and HADR missions, her resilience to Chinese belligerence and her altruistic concern for the members of the SAARC, to mention a few. Put in this background the focus of this book is on emerging contours of Indian foreign policy in new normal from virtual diplomacy to the trends of greater geopolitical tensions and global power shift at large.
