Este livro oferece uma antologia de textos selecionados e apresentados por seus respectivos comentadores como fontes para o estudo de diferentes aspectos da história da historiografia no espaço luso-brasileiro entre os séculos XVIII e XIX. O desafio, compartilhado pelos pesquisadores da historiografia em geral e, em especial, por aqueles que se dedicam ao estudo da escrita e pesquisas históricas no Brasil, está no reconhecimento da dinâmica peculiar dos diferentes contextos intelectuais, demarcados pela coexistência de tradições letradas e usos de referenciais, modelos e concepções teóricas diversas, de um modo não necessariamente excludente ou antagônico.
