Impact of climate change to nature conservation in Indonesia; proceedings.
Over the years, the scope of our scientific understanding and technical skills in ecology and environmental science have widened significantly, with increasingly greater emphasis on societal issues. In this book, an attempt has been made to give basic concepts of ecology, environmental science and various aspects of natural resource conservation. The topics covered primarily deal with environmental factors affecting organisms, adaptations, biogeography, ecology of species populations and species interactions, biotic communities and ecosystems, environmental pollution, stresses caused by toxics, global environmental change, exotic species invasion, conservation of biodiversity, ecological restoration, impact assessment, application of remote sensing and geographical information system for analysis and management of natural resources, and approaches of ecological economics. The main issues have been discussed within the framework of sustainability, considering humans as part of ecosystems, and recognising that sustainable development requires integration of ecology with social sciences for policy formulation and implementation.
A dense textbook for students and others with a basic understanding of economics. Introduces the idea of institutions as rules that constrain possibly opportunistic human behavior, protect individual spheres of freedom, help avoid or mitigate conflicts, and enhance the division of labor and knowledge, thereby promoting prosperity, which Wolfgang and Streit value over comfort. Under foundations they discuss human behavior, fundamental human values, and individual rules. Their applications include the institutional foundations of capitalism, the dynamics of competition, economic organizations, public policy as collective action, the international dimension, the evolution of institutions, alternative economic systems, and reforming the mixed economies. This book integrates some of the key issues and concepts pertaining to ecology, environment and conservation. The rapid degradation of natural resources, diminishing reserves of conventional fuel and mineral sources, and the impoverished state of environmental health has necessitated the re-evaluation of damage caused by various industrial and human activities. The topics covered in this extensive book deal with some of the crucial aspects such as emerging trends in recycling and waste management, strategies to improve sustainability and productivity, diverse branches of ecology, population dynamics and utilization of natural resources, green house effects, etc. From theories to researches to practical applications, case studies related to all contemporary topics of relevance to this field have been included in this book. This book is a resource guide for experts as well as students.
Conservation physiology is a rapidly expanding, multidisciplinary field that utilizes physiological knowledge and tools to understand and solve conservation challenges. This novel text provides the first consolidated overview of its scope, purpose, and applications, with a focus on wildlife. It outlines the major avenues and advances by which conservation physiology is contributing to the monitoring, management, and restoration of wild animal populations. This book also defines opportunities for further growth in the field and identifies critical areas for future investigation. By using a series of global case studies, contributors illustrate how approaches from the conservation physiology t...
This paper presents a framework for analyzing tropical deforestation and reforestation using the von Thunen model as its starting point: land is allocated to the use which yields the highest rent, and the rents of various land uses are determined by location. Forest cover change therefore becomes a question of changes in rent of forest versus non-forest use. While this is a simple and powerful starting point, more intriguing issues arise when this is applied to analyze real cases. An initial shift in the rent of one particular land use generates feedbacks which affect the rent of all land uses. For example, a new technology in extensive agriculture should make this land use more profitable a...
The highly publicized obscenity trial of Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness (1928) is generally recognized as the crystallizing moment in the construction of a visible modern English lesbian culture, marking a great divide between innocence and deviance, private and public, New Woman and Modern Lesbian. Yet despite unreserved agreement on the importance of this cultural moment, previous studies often reductively distort our reading of the formation of early twentieth-century lesbian identity, either by neglecting to examine in detail the developments leading up to the ban or by framing events in too broad a context against other cultural phenomena. Fashioning Sapphism locates the noveli...
