Die Deutsche Idiomatik geht auf eine jahrzehntelange Forschung zum Thema und Erfassung des Materials zurück (schrifliche und mündliche Quellen). Ein ausführlicher Vorspann erläutert detailliert die lexikographischen, linguistischen und allgemeineren Kriterien, und eine breite wissenschaftliche Einführung sucht den komplexen Begriff „der Idiomatik“ anhand des Deutschen konsequent zu entwickeln und ihn auf seine allgemeineren (linguistischen und anthropologischen) Grundlagen zurückzuführen.

Synonymwörterbuch der deutschen Redensarten
Das Wörterbuch wurde in seinem systematischen Teil „von unten nach oben“ entwickelt, d.h. einserseits von bedeutungsgleichen („idiomatische Synonymie“) und bedeutungsähnlichen Ausdrücken aus, andererseits von den Prinzipien des Oberbegriffs, der Opposion usw. aus. Daher ist jedes einzelne Wortfeld in Untergruppen aufgegliedert und hat zugleich ein weiteres Woprtfeld „über“ bzw. ein Oppositionsfeld „neben“ sich. Als weitester Rahmen dient ein im Ansatz bereits von Casares entworfenes allgemeines Schema, das man als „kulturspezifisch“ bezeichnen könnte. ‐ Diese „Leitgedanken“ geben dem System eine sehr hohe Kohärenz. ‐ Kontrastive Untersuchungen z.B. zum Spanischen haben gezeigt, dass das onomasiologsiche System nicht an das Deutsche gebunden ist, sondern die spanischen Idiome mühelos darin Platz finden.
