This book provides a comprehensive, state-of-the art review of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for sickle cell disease (SCD). The book reviews new data about risk prediction for severe SCD, outlines the unique challenges of HSCT for patients with SCD, profiles the supportive care guidelines for patients who are undergoing HSCT, highlights our current understanding of the best transfusion support for SCD patients prior to, during and after HSCT, and provides new perspectives about the ethics of HSCT for pediatric patients with SCD. Published in the last few years, several landmark phase III trials that utilize matched unrelated and haploidentical donors for HSCT in SCD patients are also placed in context with respect to current management. Written by experts in the field, Sickle Cell Disease and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation is a valuable resource for physicians and researchers dealing with and interested in this challenging, yet exciting, curative therapy for sickle cell disease, that will help guide patient management and stimulate investigative efforts.

Subcellular Proteomics

This volume summarizes the new developments that made subcellular proteomics a rapidly expanding area. It examines the different levels of subcellular organization and their specific methodologies. In addition, the book includes coverage of systems biology that deals with the integration of the data derived from these different levels to produce a synthetic description of the cell as a system.

Wave Propagation in Complex Environments

Wave Propagation in Complex Environments

The problem of wave propagation, such as elastic waves, acoustic waves, and electromagnetic waves, are commonly encountered in a wide range of areas, including civil engineering, mechanical engineering, wireless communication, remote sensing, meteorology, etc. In realistic scenarios, waves normally propagate in complex environments. Electromagnetic waves are transmitted through the medium with small particles that have significant scattering and absorbing effects. Sound waves radiated by underwater vehicles in shallow seas are reflected by the sea surface and seabed. Wave propagation in complex environments is often associated with multi-physics fields. Ultrasound waves propagation in porous media can generate heat, and elastic waves in piezoelectric materials induce electric fields. In addition, the physical mechanism of wave propagation in complex environments should be investigated across different scales. For example, to understand the interaction between light transmission and the matters in the surrounding medium, it is necessary to couple particle physics, electromagnetics, and geometric optics.

The Stress Effect

Reveals the powerful and undermining effects of stress on good decision making-and what leaders can do about it The ability to make sound and timely decisions is the mark of a good leader. But when leaders with otherwise strong track records suddenly begin making poor decisions-as seen in the recent corporate scandals that rocked the business world-the impact can be widespread. In The Stress Effect, leadership expert Henry L. Thompson argues that stress is often the real culprit behind this leadership failure: when leaders' stress levels become sufficiently elevated-whether in the boardroom or on the front line of a manufacturing process-their ability to effectively use their emotional intel...
