This Festschrift is a tribute to the eminent scholar, Professor Richard Kounai Chang, on his retirement from Yale University on June 12, 2008. During his over four decades of scientific exploration, Professor Chang has made a lasting contribution to the development of linear and nonlinear optics and devices in confined geometries, of surface second-harmonic generation and surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and of novel methods for detecting airborne aerosol pathogens. This volume assembles a collection of articles contributed by former students, collaborators, and colleagues of Professor Chang all over the world. The topics span a diverse scope in applied optics frontiers, many of which are rooted in Professor Chang's pioneering research.

Building extraction from remote sensing data plays an important role in urban planning, disaster management, navigation, updating geographic databases, and several other geospatial applications. Even though significant research has been carried out for more than two decades, the success of automatic building extraction and modeling is still largely impeded by scene complexity, incomplete cue extraction, and sensor dependency of data. Most recently, deep neural networks (DNN) have been widely applied for high classification accuracy in various areas including land-cover and land-use classification. Therefore, intelligent and innovative algorithms are needed for the success of automatic building extraction and modeling. This book presents the state of the art in the areas of ontology evolution and knowledge-driven multimedia information extraction, placing an emphasis on how the two can be combined to bridge the semantic gap.
