Identification of genes and regulators that are shared across T cell associated diseases

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of hundreds of diseases and millions of patients have led to the identification of genes that are associated with more than one disease. The aims of this PhD thesis were to a) identify a group of genes important in multiple diseases (shared disease genes), b) identify shared up-stream disease regulators, and c) determine how the same genes can be involved in the pathogenesis of different diseases. These aims have been tested on CD4+ T cells because they express the T helper cell differentiation pathway, which was the most enriched pathway in analyses of all disease associated genes identified with GWASs. Combining information about known gene-gene inte...

Immunobiology of Organ Transplantation

Currently, individuals interested in seeking an in-depth discussion of transplantation immunology must seek individual articles published in several journals, or extrapolate information from various non-transplant immunology textbooks. The purpose of this text is to provide the reader with a single source of information for the basic science of immunobiology of organ transplantation. It is unique that it focuses on immunobiology from the basic research side, with an emphasis on the cellular and molecular levels. The readers will be physicians, scientists, and graduate students interested and engaged in the study of immunology as it relates to allo- and xenotransplantation. This book is designed to be the reference standard for the immunobiology of transplantation.

Apoptotis: Pharmacological Implications and Therapeutic Opportunities

Programmed cell death (PCD) has become a topic of widespread interest and experimentation over the past decade. Written by experts in the field,Apoptosis: Pharmacological Implications and Therapeutic Opportunities concentrates on presenting an overview of PCD pathways as they are currently understood, and strives to identify important unanswered questions as well as other therapeutic possibilities suggested by recent biochemical discoveries. Understanding the biochemical pathways that participate in the cell death process has become an important goal in developmental biology, neurobiology, cardiology, and infectious disease research. The control of apoptosis has also become a major area of investigation in the field of cancer biology.Apoptosis: Pharmacological Implications and Therapeutic Opportunities contains an overview for those with a general interest in apoptosis, and provides discussions of sufficient depth to be useful for specialists in the field.
