Health and Wellbeing in Late Life

This open access book takes a multidisciplinary approach to provide a holistic understanding of late old age, and situates the aged person within the context of family, caregivers, clinical and other institutions. All through the book, the author discusses preparedness for an aging individual as well as the society in the Indian context. The book highlights inevitable but mostly neglected health issues like depression, dementia, fall, and frailty and provides detailed analyses of solutions that are practicable in low resource settings. It also brings up intergenerational differences and harmony in the context of holistic care of older Indians. Alongside clinical perspectives, the book uses n...

Engineered Biomaterials

This book highlights recent advances focusing on the synthesis methods of engineered biomaterials and their applications. The book discusses recent applications of various approaches and technology in improving the functional properties and biological activities of biopolymers. It includes two major sections: the first section introduces a range of methods which lead to materials with enhanced properties for a range of practical applications, along with the positives and limitations of the techniques. The second section covers recent trends and advances in application of engineered biomaterials that assist materials scientists and researchers in mapping out the future of these new improved materials through value addition in order to enhance their use. Contributions in the book are done by prominent researchers from industry, academia, and government/private research laboratories across the globe. The book summarizes in a fairly comprehensive manner many of the recent technical advancements in the area of biopolymers. The book is intended to serve as a reference resource in the area of polymers science.

Evidence-based Management of Hypertension

The treatment of hypertension is now evolving into a decision-making process of ever greater complexity. Not only has the range of drugs available increased but so too has our knowledge of the diversity of individual patients' responsiveness to therapy, and the need to tailor their treatment with reference to a wide variety of additional factors. In order to provide effective patient care, the clinician needs to be aware of all the options available, but also of the evidence supporting their use and the extent to which that evidence justifies the choices made. In this new volume, leading authorities in their fields draw on the available evidence to provide answers to a series of key clinical...

Novel Topics in the Diagnosis, Treatment, and Follow-Up of Nephritis, Nephrotic Syndrome, and Nephrosis

This book discusses the diagnosis and treatment of several kidney diseases. For example, nephrotic syndrome is a disease in which the protein permeability of the basement membranes in the renal glomerular capillaries increases. Nephrotic syndrome may occur due to secondary causes or may be idiopathic. Glomerular diseases in children may occur secondary to primary renal involvement or systemic diseases. The clinical picture is classified as nephritic syndrome, rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and isolated proteinuria or hematuria. Primary examinations that help define the clinical picture include a review of signs and symptoms, urine examination, amount of proteinuria, and renal function. A biopsy is performed on patients to determine the underlying disease, and the appropriate treatment is arranged according to this result. This book discusses all these issues and more.
