A merchant’s remarkable travel account of an African kingdom Muḥammad al-Tūnisī (d. 1274/1857) belonged to a family of Tunisian merchants trading with Egypt and what is now Sudan. Al-Tūnisī was raised in Cairo and a graduate of al-Azhar. In 1803, at the age of fourteen, al-Tūnisī set off for the Sultanate of Darfur, where his father had decamped ten years earlier. This book provides a handlist of the Islamic codices hosted in the library of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at the University of Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). Theirs is one of the most important collections of Islamic manuscripts in the horn of Africa. Almost totally unexplored, the collection contains many valuable examples of the rich and variegated manuscript tradition of the Ethiopian Muslims. Each entry describes the main physical features and the most important texts contained in the codex. The catalogue includes a detailed analysis of a selection of watermarked papers and bindings--richly illustrated with pictures from the manuscripts. An extensive appendix contains over eighty plates of paleographical samples of dated manuscripts. Several indices (titles of the works, personal and place names, etc.) facilitate the usage of the handlist for further research.
"The study investigates how Muslim religious specialists (fuqarâ, sing. fakî) acquire Qur'anic knowledge in the context of the 'communities of practice'. It contextualises the Qur'anic schools of Jebel Marra in the Sudan arguing that the fuqarâ increase their access to knowledge of the Qur'an by socially interacting with each other. The present study examines President Ja'far Numayrī's experiment of reinstating Islamic law in the Sudan and the methods employed to this end, in the light of its historical context and sources of inspiration. Islamist legislation, legal circulars and judicial practice are here utilized as source material for the analysis of the methodology employed in Numayrī's experiment and its application with a view to evaluating their impact on the uncodified Islamic law, state control of public morals, and on Sudanese society and economy. The focus of attention here is the judge as an instrument for implementing the government's Islamist policy by means of expanded judicial discretion based on a synthesis of traditional Islamic and modern non-Islamic sources of law. Why another study of Islam and politics in Sudan? The unique history of Sudan's Islamic politics suggests the answer. The revolt in 1881 was led by a Mahdi who came to renew and purify Islam. It was in effect an uprising against a corrupt Islamic regime, the largely alien Turco-Egyptian ruling elite. The Mahdiyya was therefore an anti-colonial movement, seeking to liberate Sudan from alien rule and to unify the Muslim Umma, and it later evolved into the first expression of Sudanese nationalism and statehood.
