Palestine, a Jewish Question

This volume is more about Jewish people than it is about Palestine, and it is, in turn, more about Palestine than it is about Israel, the latter only being mentioned in a secondary way. As such, this book isn’t addressed exclusively to readers of a single religious or cultural community. It’s addressed first and foremost to those who want to know more about the reasons behind the Israel-Palestine conflict and how to solve it. Although the violence with which the word “Palestine” is often associated remains a mystery for many people, it can be rationally explained. The book’s introduction reserves a few surprises and its conclusion offers readers contemporary perspectives in light o...

This collection of essays critiques human rights field missions that were part of large UN and other multinational peacekeeping operations during the period 1994 through 1997. The authors served as human rights officers for the missions, including those in El Salvador, Haiti, Cambodia, Guatemala, Rwanda, and Bosnia. The several chapters trace the evolution of the missions, the role of human rights within the peacekeeping process, and the relationship between monitoring abuses and rebuilding the institutions necessary for a rights-respecting civil society. Future peacekeeping ventures should benefit from the analysis of these operations and from the recommendations that conclude each of the two sections of the book.

Isaac's Army

1930s Warsaw was a thoroughly cosmopolitan, even swinging city. Larger than Chicago, it was host to a rich Jewish cultural life. It seemed inconceivable that all this was about to be swept away, but then came the dark events of September 1939. As the Nazi invasion of Poland began, a ragtag army calling itself the Jewish Resistance Force fell into shape around the handsome, quick-witted Isaac Zuckerman. Impossibly daring, the JRF held out until the end of the war, by which time fewer than 100 of its members survived. ISAAC'S ARMY is the thrilling tale of the fortunes of the JRF's main participants, told in vivid prose that brilliantly creates an atmosphere febrile with danger, heroism and ingenuity – like Babel's Odessa Tales crossed with the Great Escape. In amongst the tragedy, ISAAC'S ARMY manages to be touching, entertaining, and even very funny, and ultimately a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit.

At the Edge of the World

"This book is a ecord, in words and more than 90 black-and-white photographs, of Mohr's journeys to such places as Romania, Karachi, NManilla, Algeria, Lapland and Nicaragura. It illuminates his ongoing concern with humanitarian issues as well as his bemused observations regarding clashes between international policy and local politics and personalities, between media hype and traditional magic". -- Jacket.
