Value Creation with Digital Twins

Value Creation with Digital Twins

A digital twin is a digital representation of a real-world counterpart, which can receive and provide data to create value within a use case. Digital twins create value for users by enabling new and enhanced smart services. However, ambiguous definitions and terminology coupled with a lack of shared conceptual reference frameworks complicate cross-functional discussions and hinder the widespread implementation of digital twins. This thesis proposes a new definition and presents two conceptual reference frameworks to systematically depict value creation with digital twins. A design science research approach with mixed methods was used to iteratively design and evaluate these artifacts while e...

This book presents some twenty case studies, showing how companies in different industry sectors and of different sizes make advances in Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). Like the author’s previous volumes, this book provides a valuable resource for those wishing to learn about PLM and how to implement and apply it in their companies. Helping readers to · learn about implementing and benefiting from PLM; · learn about good PLM solutions and best practice; · improve their planning and decision-making abilities; · benefit from the lessons learned by the companies featured in the case studies; · proceed faster and further with PLM the book presents effective PLM solutions and best practices. At the same time, the case studies included demonstrate how different companies implement and benefit from PLM. Each case study is addressed in a separate chapter and details a different situation, enabling readers to put themselves in the situation and think through different actions and decisions. A valuable resource for PLM team managers and employees in engineering and manufacturing companies, the book is also of interest to researchers and students in industrial engineering fields.

This book discusses text and image relationships in the history of art from ancient times to the contemporary period across a diversity of cultures and geographic areas. Focusing on the use of words in art and words as art forms, thematic chapters include "Pictures in Words/Words in Pictures," "Word/Picture Puzzles," "Picture/Word Puzzles," "Words as Images," "The Power of the Word," and "Monumental and Moving Words." Chapter subsections further explore cross-cultural themes. Examining text and image relationships from the obvious to the elusive, the puzzling to the profound, the minor to the major, the book demonstrates the diverse ways in which images and writing have been combined through the ages, and explores the interplay between visual and written communication in a wide range of thought-provoking examples. A color insert is included. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Smart Services Summit

This book offers state-of-the-art descriptions of intelligent service innovations in industry, supported by novel scientific approaches. It gathers findings presented at the 3rd Intelligent Services Summit, which took place in Zurich in September 2020, and chiefly focused on the design and application of Digital Twin as an enabler for business development in the field of smart services. Divided into three parts, the book addresses the challenges involved in the successful development and implementation of smart services for industry and science, ranging from data management to product design and lifecycle management. The four main aspects covered are industrial challenges, value system design (how to integrate resources into service ecosystems to create value), value creation through value proposition (how to create value for ecosystem actors), and value capture (how to create value for ecosystem businesses). Given its scope, the book offers an essential guide for practitioners and advanced students alike.

Bioinformatics Methods and Protocols

Computers have become an essential component of modern biology. They help to manage the vast and increasing amount of biological data and continue to play an integral role in the discovery of new biological relationships. This in silico approach to biology has helped to reshape the modern biological sciences. With the biological revolution now among us, it is imperative that each scientist develop and hone today’s bioinformatics skills, if only at a rudimentary level. Bioinformatics Methods and Protocols was conceived as part of the Methods in Molecular Biology series to meet this challenge and to provide the experienced user with useful tips and an up-to-date overview of current developme...

Molecular bioinformatics as a newly emerging interdisciplinary research area, comprises the development and application of algorithms for the purpose of analysis, interpretation and prediction of data and for the design of experiments in the biosciences. The heterogeneous collection of original research presented in this volume illustrates the use of the wide and diverse range of algorithmic techniques. The application of algorithms from computer sciences, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, genetic programming, evolutionary algorithms and neural nets to molecular biologyespecially DNA and RNA sequence analysis and protein engineering is broadly examined. Both algorithmic and biological background problems are explained for the benefit of an interdisciplinary audience.

Designing Landscape Architectural Education

No single project or endeavour is immune to the issues that the climate crisis brings. The climate crisis encompasses a broad register of "symptoms" – increased global temperatures and sea-level rise, droughts and extreme bushfire events, salinification and desertification of fertile land, and the list goes on. It reveals and amplifies complex causal relationships that are inherently present and traverse scales, sectors and communities divulging a range of impacts and inequalities. This publication asks designers and academic practitioners to describe their own work through an ecological lens, and then to articulate design approaches for developing new practices in landscape architecture t...

Foundations and Novel Approaches in Data Mining

Foundations and Novel Approaches in Data Mining

Data-mining has become a popular research topic in recent years for the treatment of the "data rich and information poor" syndrome. Currently, application oriented engineers are only concerned with their immediate problems, which results in an ad hoc method of problem solving. Researchers, on the other hand, lack an understanding of the practical issues of data-mining for real-world problems and often concentrate on issues that are of no significance to the practitioners. In this volume, we hope to remedy problems by (1) presenting a theoretical foundation of data-mining, and (2) providing important new directions for data-mining research. A set of well respected data mining theoreticians were invited to present their views on the fundamental science of data mining. We have also called on researchers with practical data mining experiences to present new important data-mining topics.
