In vivo Models of HIV Disease and Control

An AIDS vaccine is still elusive and HIV treatment continues to develop multidrug resistance at alarming rates. Because of the similarities between HIV and immune deficiency infections in a variety of animals, it is only natural that scientists use these animals as models to study pathogenesis, treatment, vaccine development and many other aspects of HIV. Part of the series Infectious Agents and Pathogenesis, this volume reviews the immune deficiency virus in a variety of hosts. Pathogenesis, vaccine and drug development, epidemiology, and the natural history of the monkey, mouse, cat, cow, horse, and other animal viruses are detailed and compared to HIV. Also included are chapters on the history and future of animal models, as well as a chapter on ethical and safety considerations in using animal models for AIDS studies.

Processing and Properties of Advanced Ceramics and Composites II

Three international symposia “Innovative Processing and Synthesis of Ceramics, Glasses and Composites”, “Ceramic Matrix Composites”, and “Microwave Processing of Ceramics” were held during Materials Science & Technology 2009 Conference & Exhibition (MS&T’09), Pittsburgh, PA, October 25-29, 2009. These symposia provided an international forum for scientists, engineers, and technologists to discuss and exchange state-of-the-art ideas, information, and technology on advanced methods and approaches for processing, synthesis and characterization of ceramics, glasses, and composites. A total of 83 papers, including 20 invited talks, were presented in the form of oral and poster presentations. Authors from 19 countries (Austria, Belarus, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, U.K., and the United States) participated. The speakers represented universities, industries, and government research laboratories.

High Temperature Corrosion

This invaluable book reviews the state of the art of high temperature related problems pertaining to their utility, microstructure, mechanical properties, actual behavior in different environments, their protection by various kinds of coatings at high temperatures and a new concept of nanomaterials at high temperatures. The book begins with fundamentals of oxidation and corrosion. Various concepts relating to the modification or deterioration of mechanical properties when material is exposed to an aggressive environment compared to an inert environment or vacuum are also covered. Other chapters highlight the behavior of various advanced materials to high temperature conditions, an important high temperature effect called Active Element Effect, and many high temperature coatings and their behavior.Written by world-renowned authors in their own field, this book will be useful for professionals and academics in materials science and nanoscience.
