The Informal Economy in Global Perspective
This book critically engages with how formal and informal mechanisms of governance are used across the world. Specifically, it analyzes how the governance mechanisms of formal institutions are questioned, challenged and renegotiated through informal institutions. Whilst there is an emerging body of scholarship focusing on informal practices, this is scattered across a number of disciplines. This edited collection, by contrast, fosters a dialogue on these issues, moving away from monodisciplinary and normative methodologies that view informal institutions and practices simply as temporary economic phenomena. In doing so, the authors provide a wider understanding of how governance is composed of both the formal and the informal, which complement each other but are also constantly in competition. This novel approach will appeal to social scientists, economists, policy-makers, practitioners, and anyone else willing to widen their understanding of how governance works.
Neural Networks for Identification, Prediction, and Control
This publication describes examples of applications of neural networks in modelling, prediction and control. Topics covered include identification of general linear and nonlinear processes, forecasting of river levels, stock market prices, currency exchange rates, and control of a time-delayed plant and a two-joint robot. The neural network types considered are the multilayer perceptron (MLP), the Elman and Jordan networks, the Group-Method-of-Data-Handling (GMDH), the cerebellar-model-articulation-controller (CMAC) networks and neuromorphic fuzzy logic systems. The algorithms presented are the standard backpropagation (BP) algorithm, the Widrow-Hoff learning, dynamic BP and evolutionary learning. Full listings of computer programs written in C for neural-network-based system identification and prediction to facilitate practical experimentation with neural network techniques are included.
Jews and Muslims Made Visible in Christian Iberia and Beyond, 14th to 18th Centuries
This volume aims to show through various case studies how the interrelations between Jews, Muslims and Christians in Iberia were negotiated in the field of images, objects and architecture during the Later Middle Ages and Early Modernity. . By looking at the ways pre-modern Iberians envisioned diversity, we can reconstruct several stories, frequently interwoven with devotional literature, poetry or Inquisitorial trials, and usually quite different from a binary story of simple opposition. The book’s point of departure narrates the relationship between images and conversions, analysing the mechanisms of hybridity, and proposing a new explanation for the representation of otherness as the complex outcome of a negotiation involving integration.
