Lexical research plays a central role in present-day linguistics. Thanks to its ability to combine the traditional humanistic approach with state-of-the-art linguistic theory, it quickly responds to the demands of a constantly changing society, which requires scholars to provide answers to challenges in the field of translation, language teaching and language use. Furthermore, while still dealing with areas like legal language or dictionaries, the parameters of research have expanded to include previously unforeseeable fields, such as video game terminology, code mixing in pop music or the translation of erotic literature. This book shows how researchers are currently responding to these challenges, with a collection of essays representing various aspects of lexicography, combining cutting-edge research with a user-friendly approach. Divided into four major sections (Lexical Theory and Acquisition; Legal Terminology; Dictionaries; and New Challenges), it proves that lexicology, lexicography and terminology are very much at the forefront of current research trends.
Deixis – the rooting of utterances in the speech situation – is one of the most salient universals of natural language. The ways in which different languages link utterances to pragmatic factors such as speech time, speech place, and speech participants show a rich variation. This makes deixis a particular fruitful domain for the study of universals, language comparison, and the relationship between language and reality. This volume presents and discusses deictic systems of both Indo-European and non-Indo-European languages, including Russian, Czech, Spanish, German (standard and dialect), Hungarian, Chinese, Japanese, Hausa, Swahili, Hopi, Eipo, Tolai, Diyari. Focus is on spatial deixis, but other deictic and demonstrative expressions are treated as well.

This book explores the syntactic and semantic change of three types of constructions in Spanish and Portuguese: (i) complex DPs with clausal adjunction (el hecho de, o facto de), (ii) complex prepositions/complementizers and complex connectives (sin embargo de/sem embargo de, so(b) pena de), and (iii) complex predicates containing light verbs (dar consejo/conselho de). While these constructions are syntactically different, they are all clause-taking complex expressions containing a noun followed by the functional preposition de ('of'). This book is the first work to examine them together through a systematic comparative corpus study. This makes it possible to tease apart individual from gene...
This groundbreaking work argues that the seminal concept of recogimiento functioned as a metaphor for the colonial relationship between Spain and Lima. Ubiquitous and flexible, recogimiento had three related meanings—two cultural and one institutional—that developed over a 200-year period in Renaissance Spain and the viceregal capital, Lima. Female and male religious conceptualized recogimiento as a mystical praxis that aspired toward "union" with God, and it was also articulated as a fundamental virtue of enclosure and quiescent conduct for women. As an institutional practice, recogimiento involved substantial numbers of women and girls living in convents, lay pious houses, schools, and...
