Subjective human rights of children are reasonably fathomed cooperatively by practice, activism and research. Approaches in interdisciplinary learning and teaching in childhood and children’s rights are demonstrated as possibilities for social change through acquiring competencies to think and act children’s rights. This book is dedicated to Manfred Liebel and focuses on his life’s work. He has, throughout his life and work, combined social scientific childhood theories and children’s rights discourses with practical, topical examples of protagonism and agency of children and young people in different national and international contexts.
‘Children Out of Place’ and Human Rights
This volume brings together tributes to Judith Ennew’s work and approach based on issues related to children she once referred to as ‘out of place’, that is to say children whose living conditions and ways of life appear far removed from Western images of childhood. Decolonizing Childhoods
European colonization of other continents has had far-reaching and lasting consequences for the construction of childhoods and children’s lives throughout the world. Liebel presents critical postcolonial and decolonial thought currents along with international case studies from countries in Africa, Latin America, and former British settler colonies to examine the complex and multiple ways that children throughout the Global South continue to live with the legacy of colonialism. Building on the work of Cannella and Viruru, he explores how these children are affected by unequal power relations, paternalistic policies and violence by state and non-state actors, before showing how we can work to ensure that children’s rights are better promoted and protected, globally.

Studying the urban agglomeration of Los Angeles County is on the one hand very interesting, exciting, as there is such a wide variety of people living there. This not only concerning ethnic origins but also in view of social classes, (haves and have nots), sub cultures, 'Lebenswelten' and milieus. On the other hand, studying L.A. empirically, i.e. living, working and more than anything else talking to people while observing them, gives an insight into how a society so full of discrepancies works and operates. Undocumented migration to the U.S. and the U.S.-American textile and garment industry are examples that demonstrate well the interconnectedness of international economic interests, policy-making and migration flows.
Children’s Rights and the Capability Approach
This volume addresses the conditions allowing the transformation of specific children’s rights into capabilities in settings as different as children’s parliaments, organized leisure activities, contexts of vulnerability, children in care. It addresses theoretical questions linked to children’s agency and reflexivity, education, the life cycle perspective, child participation, evolving capabilities and citizenship. How do children perceive access and participation rights in environmental matters? The study presented in this book aims to broaden the discourse on political participation in environmental issues to include the perspectives of children and young people. As part of a participatory qualitative study, six interviews were conducted with young activists to explore their perspectives on their rights in environmental matters. The theoretical framework of the study is the concept of 'Living Rights'. Different dimensions of children's understanding of rights in relation to a healthy environment are analyzed, and challenges that children encounter when invoking their rights to access and participation are revealed.
The Power of the Occult in Modern Africa
