Let Me Tell You a Story
Storytelling has been an art and form of entertainment for many cultures for thousands of years. Every family has their special stories. In this way culture is created and passed down to future generations. The stories in this collection represent five generations of our family. Our family would sit around a dinner table or a campfire and tell and retell these stories from the past. Our family loved the sharing of humor through this special communication. In this way we also shared each other’s lives. My family has asked that I record these so that they will be passed on to future generations so that they might enjoy them as well. All of the stories elicit laughter because of the humor. The stories are organized around themes. The one thing that is constant about the stories is that they are all “true stories”.
Grinnin’ Like a Jenny Eatin’ Saw Briars
We use social media to facilitate the process of communication. But how well do we concisely communicate our messages and feelings? There are certain drawbacks to new-age technologies, especially due to the need for conciseness. The written word has always carried the meaning and essence of thoughts and feelings that we strive to convey. Similes, metaphors, and sayings from regional areas and time periods specifically carry more meanings than the mere word itself. The 2,300 idioms or sayings in this book convey a meaning that connects generation to generation in the south of our country. Meet the family members that communicated daily and shared their stories using this unique language that is colorful and historical. My aunt, Arlie Wilder, used to say that she hated to see a woman grinning and laughing out loud with her mouth open like “Jenny eatin’ saw briars.” I hope you find yourself laughing like that as you read.

Preservice Elementary Teacher Education in Science
The Search for Exemplary Preservice Elementary Science Programs was undertaken to recognize programs that modeled effective teaching behaviors and prepared teachers for developing appropriate attitudes and skills in students. This document describes the seven exemplary programs that were recognized by the National Science Teachers Association's Search for Excellence. The criteria for excellence are listed and explained and perspectives are offered on what was learned from the search. Programs reviewed include those from: (1) University of Toledo; (2) Ball State University; (3) University of Georgia; (4) Eastern Michigan University; (5) Utah State University; (6) Austin Peay State University (Tennessee); and (7) University of Southern Mississippi.
