Die Bemühungen der Forschung galten - nach der faschistischen Funktionalisierung Storms - seit den sechziger Jahren vorrangig der Entdeckung der gesellschaftlichen Potenziale von Storms Werk.

Between National Fantasies and Regional Realities
Despite its popularity during the nineteenth century, regional literature has often been overlooked with regard to its role in the development of German national consciousness. By exploring various illustrations of geographic-historical landscapes in texts written before the 1848 revolutions and after the 1871 unification, this book investigates the vital polyphony generated by unique regional voices throughout the age of nationalism. Close readings of texts by Berthold Auerbach, Theodor Storm, Wilhelm Raabe, Fritz Reuter, Theodor Fontane, Gottfried Keller, and Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach examine recognizable and unfamiliar regions. Although this study concentrates on provincial writings, literary regionalism's fictionality and simultaneous referentiality raise broader questions for the programmatic aesthetics of Poetic Realism and for inquiries into identity formation.

Die Vorstellung der bürgerlichen Kleinfamilie als ‚heiler‘, oft als schlicht ‚natürlicher‘ Formation hat sich tief in das Sprechen über Familien eingegraben. Der Band fragt nach den Bausteinen dieser Erzählung in juristischen und literarischen Texten der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts und der Gegenwart. Der Mythos „Familie“ entsteht auch im Austausch beider Diskurse als machtvolle Erzählung – und wird gleichzeitig von Beginn an massiv in Frage gestellt. Die noch heute hitzig geführten Debatten zu traditionellen oder progressiven Familienformen, insbesondere zum so genannten Kindeswohl, werden in ihrer Widersprüchlichkeit dann verständlicher, wenn man die divergierenden Traditionslinien der Diskurse kennt. Neben den juristischen Texten werden literarische Beispiele u. a. von Adalbert Stifter, Wilhelm Raabe, Clemens J. Setz, John von Düffel und Peter Wawerzinek gelesen.

Gypsies and Orientalism in German Literature and Anthropology of the Long Nineteenth Century
An apparently nomadic diaspora nation of Indian provenance, the Gypsies are present with notable frequency in Germanic literatures from Wolzogen and Brentano to Stifter, Keller, Storm, Raabe, Jensen, Saar and Thomas Mann. Against the background of the still officially unacknowledged Romany Holocaust, Saul analyses in a series of close interpretations the stations of the literary construction of the Gypsy prior to the human disaster. The book's synthesis of scholarship in cultural, social and institutional history, the history of ideas and literary history will appeal to the scholarly community across traditional disciplinary boundaries, and will also serve as a valuable introduction for students from diverse fields.
