One of the most significant Portuguese artists alive today, Pedro Cabrita Reis has produced a complex oeuvre encompassing a variety of media. His paintings, sculptures and site-specific installations are primarily composed of found and manufactured objects. Often employing common, simple materials, his work touches on issues of space, architecture and memory, with a suggestive power of association that goes beyond the visual to the level of metaphor. Bringing together the viewer's subjective conscience with the greater conscience of everyday life, Cabrita Reis's artworks induce a reconstruction of individual and collective memory, creating an expansion of meaning and proposing a literal and figurative reconstruction of the world. This lavishly illustrated publication provides a comprehensive overview of the artist's work from the mid-1980s to the present, and includes writings by the artist as well as bibliography and thumbnail catalogue raisonné.

London focuses on the four London projects to date by renowned Portuguese artist Pedro Cabrita Reis, at Haunch of Venison and the Frieze Art Fair in 2005, Camden Arts Centre in 2004, and Pearl Projects in 2003. Reis is interested in man's relationship to architecture and the fabricated environments in which we live. The exhibition included three sculptures and a group of five large scale monochrome paintings in sombre dark colours presented behind glass, creating perspectival boxes that reflect the room in which they are sited. On close inspection the monochrome fabric makes its material presence felt and the viewer's gaze flits between seeing their own image and the work's materiality. Included is a conversation between the artist and David Batchelor, and a major new essay by art critic Sarah Kent. Pedro Cabrita Reis (b.1956) represented Portugal at the 2003 Venice Biennale.

The work of Portuguese artist Pedro Cabrita Reis (Lisboa 1956) is undergirded by a profound interest in nature landscape architecture and colour. This book features one of his last woks The tree of light a series of black and white photographs of millenary olive trees of which he takes care himself in his rural villa in the Algarve. These olive trees of sculptural shapes convey the balance the strenght and the classicism that characterize his work. The book includes a short text by the artist expressing his interest in these trees as elements containing an anthropologic memory.
