The activities of Rem Koolhaas and his staff were widely discussed even before the foundation of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in 1975. Today, many contributions on the work of OMA can be found in the international architectural press, including Koolhaas’ own writings. Rem Koolhaas/OMA
Rem Koolhaas (Rotterdam,1944) studied architecture at the AA in London--where he went on to become a lecturer--and at the IAUS in New York, during Peter Eisenman's time there. Koolhaas has always been connected with the theory of architecture, as lecturer at the innovative AA, as a speaker, and with his published work: Delirious New York, a retrospective manifesto for Manhattan (1978) and the recent S, M, L, XL (1995). In 1972 Koolhaas set up the OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture), whose name clearly expresses the planning intentions of the team, comprising Koolhaas, Elia and Zoe Zenghelis, and Madelon Vriessendorp.

Dutch architect, architectural theorist and urban thinker Rem Koolhaas (born 1944) has been a protagonist of the international architectural avant-garde since the 1970s; his numerous worldwide awards include the Pritzker Prize in 2000 for his lifetime achievement. Through a series of essays, this book interprets his many buildings and projects by drawing on Koolhaas' own theoretical oeuvre of polemics, manifestos, interviews, books such as Delirious New York and his so-called "design patents." Elements of Architecture
A follow-up to Rem Koolhaas’s iconic S, M, L, XL, this encyclopedic tome illustrates the research project lying behind the 14th International Architecture Biennale. The focus of this book is the evolution of the elements used by architects of every age throughout the history of architecture. Doors, windows, ceilings, floors, stairs, balconies, and other basic elements of architecture—often overlooked but universally familiar—are studied, analyzed, and cataloged by means of an endless variety of visual references, from ancient times to modern developments. By looking at the evolution of architectural elements that are common to all cultures, this exploration avoids the classical Eurocentrism that often still characterizes architectural discourse. National identity has seemingly been sacrificed to modernity. Nevertheless, unique national features and mentalities continue to exist and flourish just as international collaboration and exchange intensifies.
