Cities as Multiple Landscapes
Cities are composed of a combination of urban and rural spaces, buildings and boundaries, and human bodies engaged in political, social, and cultural discourses. Together, these combine to create what the contributors to this volume call multiple landscapes. Developing a new theoretical conceptualization of cities, this book unites American and European approaches to comparative urban studies by investigating the concept of multiple landscapes in two sister cities: New Orleans and Innsbruck. As the essays reveal, both New Orleans and Innsbruck have long been centers of multicultural exchange, have strong senses of historical heritage, and profit from the spectacular geographies in which they are situated. Geography, in particular, links both cities to environmental, technological, and security challenges that must be considered in connection with aesthetic, cultural, and ecological debates. Exploring the many connections between New Orleans and Innsbruck, the interdisciplinary essays in this book will change the way we think about cities both local and abroad.

Sites of Knowledge combines the history of the University of Vienna with the history of its buildings. The evolution of one of Central Europe"s oldest universities is laid out in essays on the Alma Mater Rudolphina from the points of view of history of architecture and of art, history of science and of the university. This history sets off from the former Duke"s College in Vienna"s inner city district of Stubenviertel and continues via the "Palace of Knowledge" on the Ringstrasse and the glass building Juridicum at Schottenbastei to more recent buildings erected in the Alsergrund district. Each of these buildings represents its own era and at the same time constitutes a lasting expression of the way the university, which is now the largest in the German-speaking realm, has actively shaped its own role.

The Politics of Cultural Retreat
An illuminating history of state-building, nationalism, and bureaucracy, this book tells the story of how an international cohort of Austrian officials from Bohemia, Hungary, the Hapsburg Netherlands, Italy, and several German states administered Galicia from its annexation from Poland-Lithuania in 1772 until the beginning of Polish autonomy in 1867. Historian Iryna Vushko examines the interactions between these German-speaking bureaucrats and the local Galician population of Poles, Ukrainians, and Jews. She reveals how Enlightenment-inspired theories of modernity and supranational uniformity essentially backfired, ultimately bringing about results that starkly contradicted the original intentions and ideals of the imperial governors.
Nikolaus Joseph Jacquin’s American Plants
Nikolaus Joseph Jacquin’s American Plants offers a detailed account of the Austrian botanical expedition to the Caribbean that took place between 1754 and 1759, culminating in the publication of the Selectarum stirpium americanarum historia (1763) by the famous Dutch-born scientist, the first Linnaean botanist in the New World. Novel findings about Jacquin’s family and early life are given. Through a careful reading of Jacquin’s own publications, letters and manuscripts, Santiago Madriñán provides, from a botanist’s perspective, a meticulous description of the places visited by Jacquin and the plants he collected. The splendid color illustrations of the plants published in the luxury second edition of the Selectarum in 1780 are here reprinted, together with an annotated list of the species described. This title was awarded the Stafleu Medal for 2015 for publications of 2013 and 2014 for outstanding publications in historical, bibliographical, and/or nomenclatural aspects of plant taxonomy.
