Queen as King traces the origins of San Isidoro in León as a royal monastic complex, following its progress as the site changed from a small eleventh-century palatine chapel housed in a double monastery to a great twelfth-century pilgrimage church served by Augustinian canons. Its most groundbreaking contribution to the history of art is the recovery of the lost patronage of Queen Urraca (reigned 1109-1126). Urraca maintained yet subverted her family’s tradition of patronage on the site: to understand her history is to hold the key to the art and architecture of San Isidoro. This new approach to San Isidoro and its patronage allows a major Romanesque monument to be understood more fully than before.

Much work has already been done on the conventions and formulae of Old French literature, particularly epic literature, and on parody in the French Middle Ages. This book links these approaches, widens the concept of 'formula', and aims to show that certain authors, far from being enslaved by the conventions within which they worked, were conscious of them and could master them with sufficient independence to exploit them for calculated literary effect, and in particular for parody. It studies the fabliaux, Aucassin et Nicolette and Le Pèlerinage de Charlemagne, texts in which formulae play a varied and subtle part. In the fabliaux we find that formulae borrowed from serious literature add parodic depth to the often simple humour of these tales, but that the genre as a whole is not essentially parodic. Aucassin et Nicolette uses conventions to arouse expectations which may or may not be satisfied; parody proves to be fundamental to this work. The approach shows its full potential when applied to Le Pèlerinage de Charlemagne; study of this text's use of formulae of the epic and romance traditions reveals a high degree of complexity and a finely nuanced parody.

Définir de façon univalente la notion de mythe et celle d'utopie semble en soi une entreprise tout à fait utopique. Par ailleurs, jumeler les deux notions, celle du mythe et celle d'utopie, reléve d'un processus de réflexion qui peut facilement être à double tranchant: le mythe, construction par excellende de l'imaginaire humain, ne se situe-t-il pas ailleurs que dans un non-lieu? -- et l'utopie, quant à elle, ne fait-elle pas écho au mythe, à la fois s'en inspirant, le niant et le transformant? Redondance possible, et aussi, parfois, refus des deux domaines à admettre leur interdépendance, cheninement parallèle surtout et création commune de ce qui, en fin de compte, s'avère mythe transformé, utopie revistée. Toutefois, mythes et utopies quels que soient la position choisie, le point de vue défendu, semblent faire bon ménage, à en juger par ce projet, mavec dix-neuf textes couvrant principalement la littérature contemporaine des femmes, mais puisant parfois aux oeuvres antérieures qui ont déjà préparé le terrain, en offrant des visions d'existences idylliques -- ne serait-ce que littéraires.
