Reading Revolutionaries

  • Categories: Art

An investigation of the way we read and process (visual) language.John Sparagana is an artist and the Grace Christian Vietti Chair in the Visual Arts and Chair of the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts at Rice University. Reto Geiser is an architect and scholar of modern architecture with a focus on the intersections between architecture, pedagogy, and media. The work of Sparagana is known for its various types of physical manipulation. Following this concept, this book proposes an alternative "reading" of his work in the form of a literal understanding of visual information as text. His large-scale work of art "Crowds & Powder: The Revolutionaries" is translated into the format of a mass-market paperback book. Arranged over eighty double-page spreads, each individual page frames a full-scale fragment of this work. Not only does it allude to a growing discourse on the control and manipulation of visual narrative, as increasingly witnessed from political imagery to popular culture, but it also investigates the way we read and process (visual) language.

The job description of the architect has fundamentally changed with the emergence of a globalized society, and it will continue to do so in the future. Already today, the demands of the job no longer correspond to the profile on which classical architectural training is based. In this context, the question that arises is no longer that of the building alone, but also that of a changed approach to building and new pathways within design itself. This is where Explorations comes in: internationally celebrated authors, all of whom are professors as well and hence directly involved in the processes they describe, address the principal topics of contemporary architectural research. Taking the work...

Sigfried Giedion (1888-1968), one of the main protagonists of the architectural avant-garde in Europe, paradoxically achieved this reputation far from his homeland - in America. Nearly all of Giedion's books written after his initial stay at Harvard University were published in English long before they became available in his native German. Reto Geiser sheds new light on Giedion's life and reassesses his work through the lens of cultural transformation and modernization processes. The author questions the unbroken line of developments portrayed in the historiography of modern architecture, and argues that Giedion's position in between two cultural spheres not only caused ruptures and contradictions in his work but also productively shaped its reception on either side of the Atlantic.

This book records a critical discussion of individual approaches to the representation of space in a museum through a series of conversations. Architecture and design exhibitions have long been important public sites of broadcasting, experimentation, position-taking, and the interrogation of fundamental aspects of the designed environment. Just as individual exhibitions have constituted key benchmarks within the disciplinary history of architecture, the representation and display of space through exhibitions has operated historically as a crucial medium for shaping and embodying broader cultural attitudes toward the design of the built world. In recent years, the specific formats and challen...

Atlas of Novel Tectonics

Architects Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto have been generating some of the most provocative thinking in the field for nearly twenty years. With Atlas of Novel Tectonics, Reiser+Umemoto hone in on the many facets of architecture and illuminate their theories with great thought and simplicity. The Atlas is organized as an accumulation of short chapters that address the workings of matter and force, material science, the lessons of art and architectural history, and the influence of architecture on culture (and vice versa). Reiser+Umemoto see architectural design as a series of problem situations, and each chapter is an argument devoted to a specific condition or case. Influenced by a wide ran...

Schneider & Schneider

Archetypes features a recent series by Canadian artist David K. Ross, who works at the interface of photography, film, and installation. His images of architectural mock-ups, staged at night with dramatic lighting that isolates structures from their surroundings, demonstrate how these objects have become a charged form of proto-architecture. They also change how we view the practice of architecture by documenting and framing unseen aspects of its emergence. Built at full scale, these architectural fragments--to be removed from construction sites as buildings near completion--ensure that a project can be executed exactly to design, and they provide clients with a simulation of a building that...

Befreites Wohnen

"Sigfried Giedion's small, but vocal manifesto Befreites Wohnen (1929) is an early manifestation of modernist housing ideology and as such key to the broader understanding of the ambitions of the International Congresses of Modern Architecture (CIAM) and the debate on the industrialization of construction processes and its impact on public housing at the beginning of the twentieth century. An important step in Giedion's rise as one of the foremost propagators of modern architecture, this manifesto is based on the argumentative power of visual comparisons, and the only book the art historian both authored and designed. The German facsimile edition of Giedion's Befreites Wohnen is completed by an English translation and a scholarly essay that anchors the work in the context of its time and suggests the book's relevance for contemporary architectural discourse."--Site internet de l'éditeur.

This book brings together the work of the Los Angeles based architectural workshop Johnston Marklee since its founding in 1998 for the first time. Unified by a conceptual approach to each project, the firm's work is recognized internationally for its engagement with contemporary art practices while being deeply rooted in the history and foundations of the discipline. Reflecting on Johnston Marklee’s design process in drawing upon an extensive network of collaborators in related fields, the book is structured along seven conversations and seven artist interpretations of Johnston Marklee’s buildings and projects. A comprehensive list of work illustrated with small photographs and diagrams will conclude this very first monograph.
