Proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Green and Smart Technologies for a Sustainable Society

This symposium, originally founded in 2013 by Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Universidad de Zaragoza and University of Yamaguchi, is conceived as an international forum for the dissemination and reinforcement of research collaboration among the participating institutions. Different institutions have been invited to participate in subsequent editions. University of Cantabria had the opportunity to participate in the 2nd and 5th edition, and we are honoured to organize the present 6th conference, that unfortunately, was forced to be celebrated remotely due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. This edition continues with the topics discussed in the previous symposium. Scientific topics are aligned wi...

Biological and chemical warfare agents, including viruses, bacteria, and explosive and radioactive compounds, can induce illness or death in humans, animals, and plants. Plasmonic nanosensors as detection tools of these agents offer significant advantages, including rapid detection, sensitivity, selectivity, and portability. This book explores novel and updated research on different types of plasmonic nanosensors for analysis of biological and chemical threat agents. It covers a brief theory of plasmonic nanosensors, summarizes the state-of-art in the molecular recognition of biological and chemical threat agents, and describes the application of various types of nanosensors in the detection...

The withstanding properties of inorganic membranes provide a set of tools for solving many of the problems that the society is facing, from environmental to energy problems and from water quality to more competitive industries. Such a wide variety of issues requires a fundamental approach, together with the precise description of applications provided by those researchers that have been close to the industrial applications. The contents of this book expand the lectures given in a Summer School of the European Membrane Society. They combine an easily accessible description of the technology, suitable for the graduate level, with the most advanced developments and the prospective of future app...

Ordered mesoporous silica COK-12: mesoscale tailoring, upscaling, continuous synthesis and application in the oxidative coupling of methane

Ordered mesoporous silica (OMS) materials are a family of silica nanomaterials with pores ranging in size from 2 to 50 nm which are arranged periodically within the silica matrix. They have expanding applications in various fields of research, such as drug delivery, adsorption, separation and catalysis. COK-12 is an OMS produced by the soft-templating method, using the block copolymer P123 as a structure-directing agent. The synthesis takes place at room temperature under mild reaction conditions. In comparison with the most widely known OMS, the synthesis of COK-12 is more time efficient, inexpensive and environmentally friendly, yielding a material analogous to the well-known SBA-15. This ...

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have attracted a large amount of interest in research laboratories worldwide in recent decades, motivated by the gap between a growing interest in developing novel mixed matrix membranes by various research groups and the lack of large-scale implementation. This Special Issue contains six publications dealing with the current opportunities and challenges of mixed matrix membranes development and applications to solve environmental and health challenges of the society of 21st century.

A rapid growth in global industrialization and population has triggered intense environmental pollution that has led to a water crisis, resulting in the decay in the quality of human life and economic losses. Novel water purification techniques are expected to alleviate this challenge. Recently, various water purification techniques, along with different computational techniques, have been developed. For instance, water purification techniques, such as electromagnetic water purification, solute-surface interactions in water, use of micro-magnetofluidic devices, UV-led water purification, and use of membranes can be thoroughly investigated by using a range of computation techniques, such as m...

Rational Design of Multi-Functional Nanomaterials

One of the most important issues, when a nanomaterial is designed, is to control the synthetic pathways to ensure the final desired product. A combination of dry and wet procedures, as well as chemical and physical methodologies, it is possible to successfully prepare new multifunctional nanomaterials, often as a result of multidisciplinary cooperation between chemists, physics, biologist, physicians, material engineers, etc. Drug delivery, environmental detection of contaminants, and many industrial applications directly rely on properties such as water solubility, permeability, cell penetration, shape control, and size of the monodispersed nanoparticle, among others. Functionalized nanomat...
