University, City and State
With the proceeds of selling its city centre site to a railway, Glasgow university exchanged its original and increasingly overcrowded site for a magnificent neo-gothic building at the greenfield location of Gilmourehill in 1870. The history of the university on its new site then develops in conjunction with that of Glasgow as the second city of the Empire before suffering the privation of two world wars and the long dislocation of its local economy in the 1930s. After Word War II, the University is ever more powerfully shaped by the State as it expands threefold in size. The current flowering of links with industry and the economy through research funding, innovation and technology transfer emphasize the recognition of the imporatance of the University's economic, cultural and social role in the life of the City as its story enters the 21st century.
The Greening of London, 1920–2000
The long-term development of public green spaces such as parks, public gardens, and recreation grounds in London during the twentieth century is a curiously neglected subject, despite the fact that various kinds of green spaces cover huge areas in cities in the UK today. This book explores how and why public green spaces have been created and used in London, and what actors have been involved in their evolution, during the course of the twentieth century. Building on case studies of the contemporary boroughs of Camden and Southwark and making use of a wealth of archival material, the author takes us through the planning and creation stages, to the intended (and actual) uses and ongoing management of the spaces. By highlighting the rise and fall of municipal authorities and the impact of neo-liberalism after the 1970s, the book also deepens our understanding of how London has been governed, planned and ruled during the twentieth century. It makes a crucial contribution to academic as well as political discourse on the history and present role of green space in sustainable cities.

Bombardment, Public Safety and Resilience in English Coastal Communities during the First World War
This book makes the case for a unique coastal-urban experience of war on the home front during the First World War, focusing on case studies from the north-east of England. The use of case studies from this region problematises an often assumed national or generalised experience of civilian life during the war, by shifting the frame of analysis away from the metropolis. This book begins with chapters related to wartime resilience, including analysis of pre-war fear of invasion and bombardment, and government policy on public safety. It then moves on to a discussion of power relations and the local implementation of policy related to bombardment, including policing. Finally, the book explores the ‘coastal-urban’ environment, focusing on depictions of war damage in popular culture, and the wartime and post-war commemoration of civilian bombardment.
