With pressure to perform free from error in America’s most popular sport—an impossibility—the work done by football officials has become more difficult than ever. A Tough Job Made Harder explores how this has happened and looks at the challenges that lie ahead for the game and its officials. Cultural imperatives grounded in team allegiance have increased the stresses on football’s judges to invariably “get it right.” Officials offer a path of low resistance for those channeling ire over a game’s untoward outcome. What lies beyond the familiar and tangible? In this collection Richard Lister explores what happens at life's edges. He reflects on how we respond to loss, vulnerability and hope and considers themes of perseverance and grace. Eileen Casey describes his work as 'rich in allusions and textual layers' and 'a celebration of ordinary magic perceived by a keen eye'. Richard writes with warm empathy about people who live at the margins. These encounters are informed by his experience of living in Malawi, Cambodia and across the UK. Sky Island Journal commented that they 'rarely see this kind of emotional intimacy executed with such svelte grace'. As a semi-abstract painter, Richard writes with an artist's eye for the evocative. His work is published in a wide range of international and national publications including Orbis, Ekphrastic Review and Sky Island Journal. His poetry was longlisted for the Canterbury Festival Poet of the Year 2022, was included in 'The Fading of the Light' exhibition and is audio-exhibited at the Watts Gallery. He works alongside local people to tackle poverty in East and Central Africa and South and South-East Asia.

Winner of the 2017 John Thackray Medal awarded by the Society for the History of Natural History, U.K. Martin Lister (1639–1712) was a consummate virtuoso, the first arachnologist and conchologist, and a Royal physician. As one of the most prominent corresponding fellows of the Royal Society, many of Lister’s discoveries in natural history, archaeology, medicine, and chemistry were printed in the Philosophical Transactions. Lister corresponded extensively with explorers and other virtuosi such as John Ray, who provided him with specimens, observations, and locality records from Jamaica, America, Barbados, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and his native England. This volume of ca. 400 letters (one of three), consists of Lister’s correspondence dated from 1662 to 1677, including his time as a Cambridge Fellow, his medical training in Montpellier, and his years as a practicing physician in York.
