In the last 130 years, 30 Swiss people have won a Nobel Prize, and one of them is Richard R. Ernst. He laid the foundation for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which revolutionized medical diagnostics across the globe. In his autobiography, which the scientist completed shortly before he passed away at the age of 87, he talks about his life. Prof. Ernst grew up in a family long-established in Winterthur, Switzerland, however his childhood and adolescence were overshadowed by a demanding father. He talks in detail about the start of his career in the 1960s, when he made a number of key discoveries at Varian Associates, Palo Alto, USA, as well as about his return to ETH Zürich, Switzerland, and the shark tank that university research is. The highly talented chemist reveals how his passion for Himalayan art began while travelling in Nepal, which ended in him building up one of the most significant collections of thangkas – the tantric Buddhist scrolls. In this book, Prof. Ernst discusses openly and directly about all aspects of his life, with humility and a wry sense of humor.

Principles of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in One and Two Dimensions

Written by one of the world's leading NMR research teams, this monograph presents the most comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy available. In the course of the last two decades, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has undergone a dramatic renaissance, and the authors provide a unified review of the entire field, covering basic principles and techniques for the study of solutions and solids, with emphasis placed on methods of one- and two-dimensional spectroscopy. The material is presented in an intuitive manner, with a large number of illustrations and a rigorous mathematical framework that should satisfy a wide audience.

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is one of the most powerful and versatile techniques now available for the study of molecular structure and reaction mechanisms. Written by recognised experts in the field, this classic account of modern NMR spectroscopy was heralded on its first publication in 1987 as 'the lasting text of its age'. The text provides a thoroughly comprehensive review of modern NMR techniques and the underlying principles. It describes the study of solutions and solids using one- and two-dimensional spectroscpy, providing both a solid theoretical foundation and a description of practical procedures. The material is presented in an intuitive manner within a rigorous mathematical framework, and is extensively illustrated throughout.

Solving Problems with NMR Spectroscopy

Solving Problems with NMR Spectroscopy, Second Edition, is a fully updated and revised version of the best-selling book. This new edition still clearly presents the basic principles and applications of NMR spectroscopy with only as much math as is necessary. It shows how to solve chemical structures with NMR by giving many new, clear examples for readers to understand and try, with new solutions provided in the text. It also explains new developments and concepts in NMR spectroscopy, including sensitivity problems (hardware and software solutions) and an extension of the multidimensional coverage to 3D NMR. The book also includes a series of applications showing how NMR is used in real life ...

Richard R. Ernst
