Ulster has produced an impressive number of surgeons who have gained world-wide renown. None has been more celebrated, or more deserving of a biography than Sir Ian Fraser whose life spanned almost the whole of the 20th century. Larne and district can claim to be the cradle of the Ulster-Scots connection. It has been for centuries a main arrival point for immigrants from Scotland and a port of departure for emigrants, particularly transatlantic migrants. Its strong links with the sea-going trade are clearly reflected in the prominent families represented in Larne's graveyards. The most notable include the Chaines, Dixons, McGarels and Smileys who were not only successful merchants but were also generous benefactors of the town of Larne. One of the features of East Antrim graveyards that illustrates the Ulster-Scots interest is the remarkable collection of coats of arms on the headstones. St Cedma's in Larne has about 40 of these, most of which had rubbings taken around 1900 when they were sharper, and which are reproduced in this volume. They are not official and registered armorial bearings, but rather arms which the Scottish families who settled in the vicinity have claimed and used down the centuries.
Inscriptions on gravestones are an important, often unique source for genealogists. This series makes available genealogical information from graveyards, wills, newspapers, and other sources in Ulster. Since 1966, 21 volumes covering much of County Down, 3 volumes for County Antrim, and 4 volumes for Belfast have been published. Some volumes are still available in print, while those that are out-of-print are available on microfiche.

"This...history traces the hospital from its beginnings in 1797 as the Belfast Dispensary and Fever Hospital through momentous years of development and expansion as it responded to the needs of a growing and turbulent population. The men and women whose dedication, skill and innovation have won an international reputation for the hospital are vividly described, and the inclusion of lists of the key staff of two centuries make this lavishly illustrated book a fitting celebration of their achievement." --Dust jacket.
