This far-ranging volume offers both a broad overview of the role of the military in contemporary Asia and a close look at the state of civil-military relations in sixteen Asian countries. It discusses these relations in countries where the military continues to dominate the political realm as well as others where it is disengaging from politics.
The book is written in three parts, with Appendices, Maps, References and Photos. The first is a story of myself and immediate family, and the role we played in Chinese history. The second covers my extended family, and friends who have lived equally interesting lives. The third delves into all the major aspects of China's economy, resources, industry and infrastructure, etc, present and future. This section should interest most readers in business, industry, academic and government circles. I even tried to highlight events from history, geography, philosophy, religion, education, social welfare, agriculture, food supply, ecology, medicine, performing arts, tourism and sports, to science and technology, natural and human resources, heavy industry, "four electricals", transportation, aerospace, the military, and light industry. This book is much more than a memoir, and deserves to be treated as textbook material.

This book examines the rise and fall of the Chinese military business complex between the early 1980s and late 1990s. When the Carpenters first toured Japan, a journalist mistakenly referred to Karen as the 'lead sister' of the band. This designation stuck and Karen liked it so much that she had a T-shirt custom-made with the slogan, which she wore while drumming on the band's 1976 world tour. The term also sums up the approach of this biography: a celebratory re-evaluation of a pioneering woman. As one of the biggest-selling acts of the 1970s, sibling duo Richard and Karen Carpenter created lush soundscapes of melodic pop, producing global hits like 'We've Only Just Begun', 'Top of the World' and 'Close to You'. However, though Karen is rightly recognised as one of the greatest singers in popular music, th...
LIFE: A Transdisciplinary Inquiry examines nature, cognition and society as an interwoven tapestry across disciplinary boundaries. This volume explores how information and communication are instrumental in and for living systems, acknowledging an integrative account of media as environments and technologies. The aim of the collection is a fuller and richer account of everyday life through a spectrum of insights from internationally known scholars of the natural sciences (physical and life sciences), social sciences and the arts. How or should life be defined? If life is a medium, how is it mediated? Viewed as interactions, transactions and contexts of ecosystems, life can be recognized throu...
