Beyond Price

Man has been intrigued by the origin of pearls, sensitive to their beauty, and convinced of their medicinal value for at least 5 cent. A mixture of folklore and observation preceded the earliest scientific inquiries. Fishing and trade commenced in S. Asia, between India and Sri Lanka and around the Persian Gulf. In W. and Central Europe, Inner Asia and China, and N. Amer. Freshwater pearls were probably known and treasured before those of marine origin. A refined nomenclature points to a long familiarity with etymologically related words for 'pearl'. Pearls were prominent among the luxury products of world trade and were high among the objectives of expeditions to the eastern and western Tropics. Illustrations.

Dunhuang: China’s traditional northwest frontier and overland conduit of exchange with the Old World. Jao Tsung-i: China’s last great traditional man of letters, polymath, and pioneer of comparative humanistic inquiry during Hong Kong’s global heyday. Jao and Dunhuang had a special relationship that this book makes accessible in English for the first time. Inside, Jao proposes an entirely new school of Chinese landscape painting, reconsiders Dunhuang’s oldest manuscripts as its newest research field, and explores topics ranging from comparative religion to medieval multimedia.

Psychology Library Editions: Emotion

Emotion (or affect) is a cross-disciplinary subject in psychology. Psychology Library Editions: Emotion makes available again twelve previously out-of-print titles that were originally published between 1976 and 1999, either as a set or as individual volumes, in your choice of print or ebook. Written by a range of authors from diverse backgrounds and spanning different areas of psychology, such as clinical, cognitive, developmental and social, the volumes feature a variety of approaches and topics. This is a great opportunity to trace the development of research in emotion from a number of different perspectives.
