Who Reads Poetry

In 2012, to celebrate the centennial of Poetry, the Press published The Open Door:100 Poems,100 Years of Poetry Magazine, edited by Share and Wiman; that is the model for this new anthology of fifty essays about reading poetry. All were commissioned by Poetry for a column called The View From Here, in which people "from outside the world of poetry" are invited to describe when and why they read poetry. The editors sought contributions from philosophers and journalists, musicians and artists, doctors and soldiers, an iron-worker, a lawyer, anthropologist, economist, and politician. Contributors include Neko Case, Roger Ebert, Richard Rorty, Rhymefest, Lynda Barry, Daniel Handler, and Alex Ross. They have arranged the essays in groups and pulled out quotes to open each of the eight sections as a way to suggest themes without trying to prescribe how the pieces should be read. Each essay retains its own voice, and many are surprising, provocative, touching, or funny.

Icons of Dissent

The global icon is an omnipresent but poorly understood element of mass culture. This book asks why audiences around the world have embraced particular iconic figures, how perceptions of these figures have changed, and what this tells us about transnational relations since the Cold War era. Prestholdt addresses these questions by examining one type of icon: the anti-establishment figure. As symbols that represent sentiments, ideals, or something else recognizable to a wide audience, icons of dissent have been integrated into diverse political and consumer cultures, and global audiences have reinterpreted them over time. To illustrate these points the book examines four of the most evocative ...

In Search of the Black Fantastic

Prior to the 1960s, when African Americans had little access to formal political power, black popular culture was commonly seen as a means of forging community and effecting political change. But as Richard Iton shows in this provocative and insightful volume, despite the changes brought about by the civil rights movement, and contrary to the wishes of those committed to narrower conceptions of politics, black artists have continued to play a significant role in the making and maintenance of critical social spaces. Iton offers an original portrait of the relationship between popular culture and institutionalized politics tracing the connections between artists such as Paul Robeson, Lorraine ...

Fashion Killa

A cinematic narrative of glamour, grit, luxury, and luck, Fashion Killa draws on exclusive interviews with the leaders of the fashion world to tell the story of the hip-hop artists, designers, stylists, and unsung heroes who fought the power and reinvented style around the world over the last fifty years. Set in the sartorial scenes of New York, Paris, and beyond, music journalist Sowmya Krishnamurthy’s reporting on the intersecting histories of hip-hop and contemporary fashion focuses on the risk takers and rebels—the artists, designers, stylists, models, and tastemakers—who challenged a systemic power structure and historically reinvented the worlds of prêt-à-porter and haute coutu...
