The Profile of Imagining

Imagining is a central power of the mind. When we visualize how something looks, or imagine how some combination of ingredients might taste, we picture absent things in a way that captures what it would be like to experience them. This book offers an original theory of the nature of this important mental phenomenon and its role is in our lives.

Picture, Image and Experience

How do pictures represent? In this book Robert Hopkins casts new light on an ancient question by connecting it to issues in the philosophies of mind and perception. He starts by describing several striking features of picturing that demand explanation. These features strongly suggest that our experience of pictures is central to the way they represent, and Hopkins characterizes that experience as one of resemblance in a particular respect. He deals convincingly with the objections traditionally assumed to be fatal to resemblance views, and shows how his own account is uniquely well placed to explain picturing's key features. His discussion engages in detail with issues concerning perception in general, including how to describe phenomena that have long puzzled philosophers and psychologists, and the book concludes with an attempt to see what a proper understanding of picturing can tell us about that deeply mysterious phenomenon, the visual imagination.

System Leadership In Practice

The idea of 'system leadership' i.e. not just directly for the success and welfare of students in your own school but also in other schools is a new, exciting and growing phenomenon in English education, which is gaining widespread interest both in the UK and internationally. But there is not yet any detailed analysis of its emergence in practice. This book fills that void by bringing in-depth analysis to a term on the lips of many in the educational world.

The disciplines of school effectiveness research and school improvement practice and research have been apart for too long. This book is the first major attempt, by leading writers and practitioners in these fields, to bring the areas together in a coherent way. Existing knowledge about the characteristics of `good' schools is outlined, together with the knowledge base about how to `make schools good schools'. The book also makes an entirely original contribution to re-thinking practice in school improvement that can revolutionise our thinking in the late 1990s, and which can be of use to academics, to policymakers and to the practitioners which much existing work has neglected.
