The Harvey Lectures Series 94, 1998-1999
The Harvey Society was founded in 1905 by thirteen New York scientists and physicians with the purpose of forging a "closer relationship between the purely practical side of medicine and the results of laboratory investigation." The Society distributes scientific knowledge in selected areas of anatomy, physiology, pathology, bacteriology, pharmacology, and physiological and pathological chemistry through public lectures, which are published annually. Series 94, 1998-1999 covers themes in neurogenetic studies, the role of tyrosine phosphorylation in cell growth and disease, the biology of the epidermis and its appendages, and the phenotypic diversity of monogenic disease.
Life of the Clinician
The autobiography of one of America's most important gastroenterologists. Michael Lepore [1910-2000] was a pioneer in the field of gastroenterology. He was a member of one of the first graduating classes of the University of Rochester Medical School, and went on to a distinguished career at Columbia University, New York University, and St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center of New York. This autobiography tells of his experiences as an Italian-American who overcame prejudices to become the personal physician to such notablesas Greta Garbo and President Herbert Hoover. Michael Lepore was an alumnus of Duke University Medical School and the University of Rochester School of Medicine, and was the Director, Gastroenterology Section, Departments of Medicine and Surgery Emeritus, St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center of New York.
