Before coming to grips with an individual verse or passage in the New Testament, Bible students and expositors must understand how it relates to the theme of the book. This nontechnical survey offers readers a working understanding of the New Testament by providing the theological tools necessary to synthesize biblical passages into themes. It incorporates historical and cultural backgrounds without becoming a book on manners and customs and deals with the actual text of Scripture without becoming a verse-by-verse commentary. Pictures, charts, and outlines aid comprehension. This classic text, which has served students well for many years, is now available in paperback.

The Modern Tongues Movement

The Modern Tongues Movement

The first half of the twentieth century saw the rise of Pentecostalism with its most spectacular feature of speaking in tongues. Now, in the middle of this century, that phenomenon is being experienced in the historic Christian churches, heralded as the new Pentecostalism or the Charismatic Renewal. What has caused this new movement? What are its characteristics? Is modern tongue-speaking of God, of Satan, psychologically produced, or artificially stimulated? Was speaking in tongues designed to be the outward evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit? Was the gift of tongues given as a permanent or a temporary gift to the church? Can tongue speaking be used for private devotions and self-edification? This book presents a careful study of the modern tongues movement with its historical antecedents. It offers a thorough scriptural study of the biblical phenomenon and evaluates the current movement in the light of that study. - Back cover.

The Structure of Matthew's Gospel

This book addresses a central issue confronting the reader of the Gospel. Professor Bauer describes the impasse that has been reached in recent investigation of the structure of Matthew and demonstrates that an appreciation of literary design can provide a way forward. After identifying rhetorical features that relate to literary structure, he devotes the major part of his book to a systematic examination of such features as they appear in the Gospel in order to gain a fresh insight into the shape of the work. This study is valuable both for its comprehensive and judicious review of the question of structure in Matthew's Gospel and for the new direction which it establishes.

IN HIS NAME

Today, almost all the major Christian sects tell their followers what they can or cannot read. The truth could be disastrous to their faith. In 1562, the Vatican established a special censoring office called Index Expurgatorius, whose sole purpose was to prohibit the publication of "Erroneous Passages of the Early Church Fathers," which carried statements opposing their modern-day dogma. The Word is whatever the Christian Church says it is and when Vatican archivists came across "genuine copies of the Church Fathers, they corrected [edited, added, abridged, condensed, and supplemented] them according to the Expurgatory Index" (Index Expurgatorius Vaticanus, R. Gibbings, ed., Dublin, 1837; Th...
