Police and Policing

  • Categories: Law

Since the publication of the first edition of Police and Policing in 1989, the amount of research being conducted on the police as well as public interest in the issues concerning the role of law enforcement has grown considerably. This second, complementary edition examines new issues and changes in law enforcement since 1989, drawing from the most recent and creative research projects in the field. Some of the country's leading experts discuss their findings on topics such as officer fatigue, collaborative problem-solving, tactical patrol, suicide, the role of religion in law enforcement, affirmative action, and psychological testing. This edited collection will prove to be an invaluable resource for students, scholars, and practitioners alike.

Invisible Nation

"Every year, more than 2.5 million children are left homeless in the United States and the number of such families continues to rise annually. In every state, children are living in small quarters packed in with relatives-- in cars, in motel rooms, or in emergency shelters. In this vividly-written narrative, experienced journalist Richard Schweid takes us on a spirited journey through this "invisible nation,' giving us front-row dispatches of suffering families on the edge. Based on in-depth reporting from five major cities, Invisible Nation looks backward at the historical context of family homelessness as well as forward at what needs to be done to alleviate this widespread, although often hidden, poverty. Invisible Nation is a riveting must-read for everyone who cares about inequality, poverty and family life"--Provided by publishe

Dimensions of Crime as a Social Problem

While most edited books about crime typically concentrate on a particular dimension of it--the police, the court system, or the theories of crime, Dimensions of Crime as a Social Problem is unique in that it connects a specific problem like crime to a larger set of social problems in American society. Thus, by understanding the challenges presented by poverty, racism, inadequate education, gender, and other issues, one gains a greater understanding of the interplay between these problems as well as how they influence and are influenced by the nature of crime. This book draws on a number of researchers who have examined these relationships and offer students invaluable insight into the complexities of the problems facing society. An update of Understanding Contemporary Social Problems, this reader is designed to serve either as a supplement to a traditional textbook for courses on Social Problems or as a stand-alone text. A teacher's manual is available electronically on a CD or via email. Please contact Beth Hall at bhall@cap-press.com to request a copy.

The Criminalization of Immigration

This book presents the history of immigration to the United States, debates over criminalization under the Trump administration, and the effects on immigrants, U.S. residents, the U.S. economy, and its relationships with other nations. Robert Hartmann McNamara offers a comprehensive understanding of past and current immigration policy in the United States and exposes falsehoods in the rhetoric and narrative portraying Latino and Mexican immigrants in the U.S. Repeated statements by federal officials, including the U.S. president, that immigrants pose a threat to national security, contribute to crime, and take jobs away from native-born residents have predicated intensified immigration enfor...

Homelessness in America

Homelessness is one of the most compelling social problems in the United States. Dating from the early years in Colonial America to the current problems relating to homeless women and children, homelessness has been the topic of discussion of scholars, social activists, and policy makers. Many types of social problems are linked to homelessness, including poverty, substance abuse, foster care, and crime. As a result, unpacking the issues has proven to be a challenge for anyone interested in this topic. Homelessness in America offers an assessment of what is known about each segment of the homeless population, which contrary to conventional belief, is comprised of a wide variety of faces from...

A status offense is one that can only be committed by a youth. Examples include running away, truancy, incorribibility, curfew violations, underage drinking and smoking. While these behaviors may seem innocuous, many of them are considered "gateway" activities to more systematic and chronic forms of delinquency. The study of status offenders gained a great deal of popularity in the 1970s, but since than has been largely overlooked in the study of delinquency. The reasons for this stem largely from the fact that the difference between a status offender and a true delinquent have been blurred; there is no simple or neat distinction between the two types of offenders. However, there remain a number of unresolved issues for many status offenders, such as whether or not they should be under the jurisdiction of the juvenile justice system. This book, the first of its kind, explores the many faces of status offending and its impact on the treatment of juveniles.
