The Scottish Carter

First published in 1967, The Scottish Carter presents the history of the Scottish horse and motormen's association from 1898- 1964. The road haulage industry has expanded at the tempestuous rate, and here is recorded an equally tempestuous history of a trade union built by the men who have driven the vehicles. Angela Tuckett, an active trade unionist, also has practical knowledge of the trade union movement in the capacity of qualified solicitor and journalist. She explains the development of the men’s outlook, from the relations which obtained between master and servant in the intolerable conditions of the horse drawn era to the present-day crisis in collective bargaining. With the change...

Biological Assessment and Criteria presents a state-of-the-art overview of the applications of biological assessments and biocriteria for water quality management in fresh waters. The book presents case studies which illustrate how bioassessment has been used to identify and diagnose water quality problems. It also provides examples of the use of qualitative and quantitative biocriteria as regulatory tools to complement water quality criteria and standards. The first book to present the technical foundation, rationale, program and policy relevance, and legal basis for the most accurate tools used to assess freshwater natural resource and regulatory efforts, this book provides useful and timely information for water quality managers.

Ecotones

We live in a changing world; one in which there is much concern and discussion about the topics of global change, loss of biodiversity, and increasing threats to the sustainability of ecosystems. The effects these changes may have on the environment have lead governments and sCientists to make predictions as to how soon changes might occur, where, and with what impact for large and small regions of the Earth. Along with this concern for change in various regions has come the need to understand the role of boundaries between these regions and between landscape elements. Much previous ecological research has dealt with processes within relatively homogeneous landscape units or even the collective characteristics of a composite landscape. Now, however, there is an appreciation that abiotic and biotic components move across heterogeneous landscapes and that the boundaries between these units take on important control functions in this dynamic spatial system. Furthermore, landscape boundaries (or ecotones) are important not only in satisfying life-cycle needs of many organisms, but generally are characterized by high biological diversity.
