"Famous for his elongated forms, graceful portraits, and lush nudes, Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) is among the most loved of the extraordinary group of artists who lived in Montparnasse in the early twentieth century. Accompanying the first major Modigliani exhibition - culled from important collections in North America and abroad - in the United States in more than forty years, this book places Modigliani and his work in the context of his friends and contemporaries, all living and working in what Marcel Duchamp described as "the first truly international group of artists we ever had." The art is striking for its diversity: Cubist, Expressionist, and Primitivist, with Modigliani's art embo...

Modigliani Unmasked

An illuminating study of Amedeo Modigliani's early drawings and how they reflect the artist's conception of identity One of the great artists of the 20th century, Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) is celebrated for revolutionizing modern portraiture, particularly in his later paintings and sculpture. Modigliani Unmasked examines the artist's rarely seen early works on paper, offering revelatory insights into his artistic sensibilities and concerns as he developed his signature style of graceful, elongated figures. An Italian Sephardic Jew working in turn-of-the-century Paris, Modigliani embraced his status as an outsider, and his early drawings show a marked awareness of the role of ethnicity an...

Amedeo Modigliani

  • Categories: Art

Modigliani (1884-1920), a painter who didn’t find much happiness in his native Italy, managed only to find sorrow in France. From this unhappiness was born an original style of painting, influenced by African art, Cubism, and nights of drinking in Montparnasse. His female nudes, with their profound sensuality, aggressive nudity, and enigmatic faces, express the suffering and lack of recognition of Modigliano. He died at the age of 36. This book is made up of paintings which created scandals in their day, but which nowadays are considered inoffensive.
