MASON PATRICK

He was certainly not averse to a good fight; the confrontations and challenges he faced to ensure the continued viability of the nation's airpower demonstrate his determination, intelligence, wit, and charm." "One of the first aviation officers to recognize the full potential of airpower during war and peacetime, Patrick was remarkably successful in gaining support for the three legs of his aviation triangle: military aviation, commercial aviation, and the aviation-manufacturing base. Patrick's tenure as chief of the Air Service and, later, the Air Corps made possible the emergence of an independent Air Force."--Jacket.

Where a Man Can Go

This is the first published account of the life of Major General William Phillips, a British officer whose achievements during the American Revolution place him in the ranks of Britain's most successful generals such as Charles Cornwallis. Although he was a commoner, Phillips rose from the rank of cadet in the Royal Artillery Academy, distinguished himself through remarkable achievements in Europe's Seven Years War, and went on to command a field army in America. This story chronicles his extraordinary abilities, leadership, and innovative style which left a lasting mark on British artillery tactics and military leadership. It provides new insights into the captivity of Burgoyne's army, British operations in Virginia in 1781, and the first detailed account of the Battle of Petersburg, Virginia. In this probing biography, suitable for military buffs and historians alike, Davis uncovers new and fascinating materials about Phillips' life, including his connivance with General Cornwallis to change British strategy in the American southern theater. Though Phillips has largely been denied attention throughout history, Davis' work goes a long way toward restoring his rightful place.

General description of the collection: The Robert P. Wells papers include a completed Korean War Veterans Survey questionnaire. Wells found the rations to be better than WWII, but the clothing was inadequate for the cold weather. He describes directing traffic in the snow during the retreat from North Korea. Wells gives his opinion that General Matthew Ridgway made U.S. forces into a "fighting Army," and was "a great man." He also describes how information improved morale, and gives his opinion that Korean Augmentation to the U.S. Army (KATUSA) soldiers "were a big help." Wells describes the full welcome that he received upon his rotation to the U.S., complete with being interviewed. He says that the transition to civilian life was "big," but that he had gained confidence from his military service. He remains a member of his unit's veterans associations to stay in contact with his friends, and to talk with people who understand.

Arming the Nation for War

A decorated World War I veteran, Federal Judge Robert P. Patterson knew all too well the needs of soldiers on the battlefield. He was thus dismayed by America’s lack of military preparedness when a second great war engulfed Europe in 1939–40. With the international crisis worsening, Patterson even resumed military training—as a forty-nine-yearold private—before being named assistant secretary of war in July 1940. That appointment set the stage for Patterson’s central role in the country’s massive mobilization and supply effort which helped the Allies win World War II. In Arming the Nation for War, a previously unpublished account long buried among the late author’s papers and o...

With input from officers who served with them, their candid firsthand accounts of life at the notorious prison reveal unpublished details of the human devastation that took place there, along with unexpected glimpses of humanity.

Mobilizing America: Robert P. Patterson and the War Effort, 1940-1945

Judge Robert P. Patterson resigned from the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York City in 1940 to join the War Department to help prepare the country for a war he knew was coming. As Under Secretary of War he was responsible under Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson for industrial mobilization and procurement for the army and the army air force. The study documents Patterson’s extraordinary and largely unrecognized contributions to the war effort, recounts how the federal government transformed itself for war and converted a vast market-oriented economy into an effective war machine, and documents numerous issues about the evolution of civil-military relations during the eme...
