A Conspiratorial Life

The first full-scale biography of Robert Welch, who founded the John Birch Society and planted some of modern conservatism’s most insidious seeds. Though you may not know his name, Robert Welch (1899-1985)—founder of the John Birch Society—is easily one of the most significant architects of our current political moment. In A Conspiratorial Life, the first full-scale biography of Welch, Edward H. Miller delves deep into the life of an overlooked figure whose ideas nevertheless reshaped the American right. A child prodigy who entered college at age 12, Welch became an unlikely candy magnate, founding the company that created Sugar Daddies, Junior Mints, and other famed confections. In 19...

Robert Welch

Trained at the Royal College of Art in London where he was a contemporary of David Mellor, Robert Welch was one of the leading British designers of the twentieth century. Strongly influenced both by the artisanal tradition of the Arts and Crafts movement and by Scandinavian Design, he set up his own studio in the mid-1950s, initially working on silverware but then branching out into broader product design. His Alveston tableware range won a Design Council award in 1965 and in the same year he was appointed a Royal Designer for Industry, creating elegant functional designs both for mass production and for one-off commissions. Robert Welch – Design: Craft & Industry traces both the progress of Welch's career and design philosophy and the evolution of the company and products that he created. Lavishly illustrated with exclusive material from the Robert Welch archive, including working sketches and rare archive photography, this is the definitive book on one of the twentieth century's greatest product designers.

"A friendly and honest biography of Robert Welch. Until Robert Welch is fully known, he may well be the Unknown Soldier of our time. But in the time to come, if there is to be a future and a history for the United States of America, Robert Welch will be revered as the Unknown Soldier should be, with a shrine and the undying flame"--

Elmer Gertz recalls his long battle in what legal scholars regard as the second most important libel case in legal history: Gertz v. Robert Welch, Inc. Gertz's ordeal began in Chicago during the violent peace demonstrations of 1968. A youth, Ronald Nelson, was killed by a Chicago policeman, Richard Nuccio. Gertz represented the Nelson family in civil suits against Nuccio and the Chicago police department. After Nuccio was convicted of murder, the John Birch Society published an article in its journal, American Opinion, claiming that Nuccio was framed by Communists. Gertz was targeted as a prime Communist instigator. After reading and studying the article, Gertz filed suit against Robert Welc...

Church Administration

For churches and religious nonprofit operations, the business of business is not business - it is ministry. Still, such institutions have to make plans. Because skilled organization is needed to accomplish specific tasks, a leader must train and motivate workers in progress and effectiveness. This second edition of Church Administration helps pastors and church staff become effective and efficient leaders, managers, and administrators. Among the topics discussed are: Adminstration Documents, Organizing the Church, Administering Personnel Resources, Financial Resources, Physical Resources, and Administering Risk Management. Writing for students as well as those already in this line of work, author Robert H. Welch promises, "If you understand the tenants of general administration and the techniques of ministerial leadership your job will be made significantly easier."
