Urban Waterways: Evolving Paradigms for Hydro-based Urbanisms investigates the environmental, cultural, and economic future of cities on the water in the 21st century. Collected here are urban projects across the globe from 15 cities on 5 continents representing not only the complexities of urban life in the face of environmental concerns, global economic shifts, waste and energy management, and post-industrial legacies but also new thinking and practices that are emerging from a reconsideration of the value of hydro-based urbanism through a recalibration of our settlement patterns. Contexts range from coastal cities to cities associated with river, lake and wetlands ecologies and offer stra...
Today, it is more vital than ever to build, or restore, a sustainable quality in our environment, from small scale interventions to landscape design. Such result can only be achieved by addressing specific theoretical and practical issues, namely how complexity should be conceived in architecture, how nature and architecture should interrelate, how the various disciplinary processes and the subjects who contribute to construction should be managed and mutually integrated.
The excellent results obtained from the realization of the two-day meeting on “Modern information and communication technologies in higher education: new education programs, with the pedagogic use of e-learning and education improvement” is, for the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, a great source of pride at international level. Although being the Rector of one of the oldest universities in Europe – the foundation of “La Sapienza” goes back to a papal bull of April 20, 1303 – I did not look for scientific legitimacy, nor attract students resorting to the tradition and to the past. On the contrary, along with my closest collaborators, the teaching and the administrative staff we have tried to move our University forward, accepting all the challenges of the third millennium to scientific research and to hight level training within the Italian education system. Our motto, after all, is: “the future passed here”. (Luigi Frati)
Volume 2 of Christianity and Freedom illuminates how Christian minorities and transnational Christian networks contribute to the freedom and flourishing of societies across the globe, even amidst pressure and violent persecution. Featuring unprecedented field research by some of the world's most distinguished scholars, it documents the outsized role of Christians in promoting human rights and religious freedom; fighting injustice; stimulating economic equality; providing education, social services, and health care; and nurturing democratic civil society. Readers will come away surprised and sobered to learn how this very Christian link to freedom often invites persecution. What are the dimensions of persecution and how are Christians responding to that pressure? What resources - theological, social, or transnational - do they marshal in leavening their societies? What will be lost if the Christian presence is marginalized? The answers to these questions are of crucial relevance in a world awash with religious extremism and deepening instability.

The book should serve as a supplementary text in courses and seminars as well as a general reference for biologists with an interest in DNA repair.
