Churchill's Eagles

An in-depth overview of the role of the Royal Air Force's leaders during World War II. The RAF did not come of age until the Second World War. The role of its forerunners in the Great War, the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service, although important, was peripheral to that of the ground forces. The founding father of the RAF, Lord Trenchard, was determined that it should become a fully-fledged third service, equal in status to the Royal Navy and British Army, and this he succeeded in doing between the wars, firstly by setting up the RAF College at Cranwell, and Staff College at Andover, and secondly by providing a cost-effective policeman of the more rebellious parts of the British Empire. By 1939 the RAF had grown substantially, but, of the three best aircraft of the coming War, only the Supermarine Spitfire was in service, as neither the Avro Lancaster nor the De Havilland Mosquito would be available until early 1942. Aircraft, however, were not enough. It was the leaders of the RAF, the subjects of this book, who would take the battle to the enemy and who, after six long years, would prevail.

Determinants of Intra-Industry Trade

Determinants of Intra-Industry Trade

While most international economists will note that trade is beneficial, they will also comment on the adjustment costs that are usually incurred when factors of production, most notably labor, are redistributed between industries. A goal for many policymakers is to make that adjustment process easier and smoother for the factors involved, thereby highlighting the benefits of trade, rather than the costs of trade. But what are these industries that experience smoother adjustment costs? There is a growing constituency which believes that intra-industry or like trade is a characteristic of an industry with low adjustment costs. First published in 1997, this book hopes to address some of these issues and add to the growing discussion on the topic of intra-industry trade, with special attention placed on the relationship between the U.S. and Canada.

Energy Systems Engineering

Inspired by the leading authority in the field, the Centre for Process Systems Engineering at Imperial College London, this book includes theoretical developments, algorithms, methodologies and tools in process systems engineering and applications from the chemical, energy, molecular, biomedical and other areas. It spans a whole range of length scales seen in manufacturing industries, from molecular and nanoscale phenomena to enterprise-wide optimization and control. As such, this will appeal to a broad readership, since the topic applies not only to all technical processes but also due to the interdisciplinary expertise required to solve the challenge. The ultimate reference work for years to come.
