Theology After Ricoeur

Dan Stiver presents the implications of Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutical philosophy for a postmodern theology by providing a comprehensive interpretation of Ricoeur and then applying Ricoeur's hermeneutical theory to biblical interpretation and theology. Stiver situates Ricoeur's contributions in the Yale-Chicago debate and shows how Ricoeur's textual theory provides a real alternative to George Lindbeck (on the one hand) and deconstruction (on the other).

A muster meant that men in the local shires were called together to identify those able to serve in the King's army. The muster records thereby created represent a valuable source of information about the local military resources and also gives the names of those involved. The documents which form the subject of this edition, the Herefordshire muster books for 1539 and 1542, came into existence during two military and diplomatic crises. Neither lasted long. The first was during Thomas Cromwell's term of office, the second after his fall. The first crisis was precipitated by the rapprochement between France and the Emperor Charles V signalled by the Treaty of Toledo on 12 January 1539; these powers then withdrew their ambassadors from London and made demonstrations of apparent warlike intent. Henry VIII's Council, then dominated by Thomas Cromwell, called for musters throughout the country. The commissions of array represent an attempt to discover the country's military resources

Breaking Through the Plate Glass Window--Prophetic Fragments

This is a selection of writings on themes of trauma and transformation, hope and anguish, in a time of reckoning. The first section offers biographical fragments about life after the "bulldozer" runs you over. How do you get up? How do you live with others who don't understand? How do you keep walking? They draw upon life experiences in Boston, Iona, and New Jersey. Faith is not so much about agreeing with doctrine, but a dynamic, active, seeking, questioning, trust in God. It includes both audacity and humility. The second section draws upon fragments of historical reflection, "On Violent Innocence, Mourning, and Metanoia in New Jersey." This is an exploration of the principality of white r...

The Race

A contributing editor for Outside magazine provides a behind-the-scenes look at the fast-paced, around-the-world sailing race. An invigorating behind-the-scenes look at the world of extreme sailing, The Race is also a taut, engrossing account of the first running of the competition called “The Race,” which began on December 31, 2000, in Barcelona and ended sixty-two days later in Marseilles. The most intense event of its kind—a nonstop circumnavigation of the globe in the fastest boats ever built—The Race attracts some of the world’s best sailors and arguably its most eccentric personalities. Tim Zimmermann, an experienced blue-water sailor, relates in knuckle-whitening detail how ...
