Actor William Powell is perhaps best known for his roles as charming Nick in The Thin Man films and blustery Clarence Day in Life with Father. As diverse as those characters are, they don't begin to reveal the full scope of talent demonstrated by one of Hollywood's most intelligent leading men. Elegant, witty and dignified, Powell created accessible and human characters in a great variety of roles. His talent was such that Powell has a large and growing fan base 50 years after his last film was released, evidenced by the popularity of DVD rereleases and the frequent appearance of his films on cable television. The focus of this book is Powell's work in more than 90 films, from the silent era...

From a distance Roger Kaiser's life is a fairytale. He was a schoolboy star in Dale, Indiana, led the Southeastern Conference in scoring two years in a row, sparked Georgia Tech to its first appearance in the NCAA Basketball Tournament, was a two-time All-American and married his childhood sweetheart. After a brief career in the ABL, he went into coaching and won four NAIA national titles at West Georgia College and Life University. He retired with more wins than any basketball coach in Georgia history. He is a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and the NAIA Hall of Fame. But he lost two siblings and faced the loss of a daughter at the age of 35. He has survived two bouts with cancer, numerous surgeries and is the founder of the Alexis Kaiser Foundation, designed to raise money for his granddaughter and other special needs children. He continues to work with young people at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy in Marietta, Georgia.

The History of Gibbeting

The history of gibbeting is the story of one of Britain’s most brutal forms of punishments, the hanging of criminals in a body shaped metal cage as a warning and as a form of justice. From the folklore of live gibbetings to the eerie historical documenting of this weird post-execution tradition, The History of Gibbeting examines how and why we dealt with murderers and other serious criminals in this way. The book uses case studies through history and takes a look at how the introduction of the Murder Act shaped our relationship with gibbeting for years to come, and how we as a society demanded the most shocking post-mortem treatment of criminals. Whether gibbeting was ever a successful deterrent, it is still a fascination today and gibbet cages remain on display in museums all over the country.

The man who created the boldest hard boiled fiction, Dashiell Hammett, wrote The Thin Man in 1933 and launched the fun-loving, booze-swilling, mystery-solving couple Nick and Nora Charles into American culture. MGM sold millions of movie tickets by casting William Powell and Myrna Loy as this classiest of romantic couples. Over 14 years and six films, these stars navigated grave periods of history: the Great Depression, World War II, and the Cold War. The novel and films live on as gems of a unique gritty sophistication. This complete history of The Thin Man series covers the brightest stars, tastiest scandals, headlines and conflicts behind these classic films. With a cast of hundreds, we see Hammett, his lover Lillian Hellman, and their friend Dorothy Parker fight alcoholism, sexual convention and Senator Joe McCarthy in culture wars of eerie contemporaneity.
