Sampling Design and Statistical Methods for Environmental Biologists

Provides--in an organized and compact source--a comprehensive guide to the principles of sampling design and statistical analysis methods. Reviews the principles of inference, sampling and statistical design, and hypothesis formulation, all with special reference to ecological data. Includes an impact study illustrating the principles presented. Contains a key to five broad categories of environmental studies--as well as examples and examines specific topics that apply to any environmental study. Provides a comprehensive bibliography which is cross-referenced to the text and keyed to a specific topic code (types of methods and environments studied).

Developments in Numerical Ecology

Developments in Numerical Ecology

From earlier ecological studies it has become apparent that simple univariate or bivariate statistics are often inappropriate, and that multivariate statistical analyses must be applied. Despite several difficulties arising from the application of multivariate methods, community ecology has acquired a mathematical framework, with three consequences: it can develop as an exact science; it can be applied operationally as a computer-assisted science to the solution of environmental problems; and it can exchange information with other disciplines using the language of mathematics. This book comprises the invited lectures, as well as working group reports, on the NATO workshop held in Roscoff (France) to improve the applicability of this new method numerical ecology to specific ecological problems.

Managing Troubled Waters

Reports of closed beaches, restricted shellfish beds, oil spills, and ailing fisheries are some of the recent evidence that our marine environment is in trouble. More than $133 million is spent on marine environmental monitoring annually in the United States, but officials still do not have enough accurate information to make timely decisions about protecting our waters. This book presents the first comprehensive overview of marine monitoring, providing practical information and a model for revamping the nation's marine monitoring apparatus. The volume explores current monitoring programs and whether or not they work; the benefits and limitations of monitoring; the critical need for greater coordination among local, regional, and national monitoring programs; and a recommended conceptual model for developing more effective monitoring programs.

This work details current medical uses of antiseptics and disinfectants, particularly in the control of hospital-acquired infections. It presents methods for evaluating products to obtain regulatory approval, and examines chemical, physical and microbiological properties as well as the toxicology of the most widely-used commercial chemicals. Formulations that have broad applications for both medical equipment disinfection and antisepsis are also discussed.

Showcasing a discussion of the experimental process and a review of basic statistics, this volume provides methodologies to identify general data distribution, skewness, and outliers. It features a unique classification of the nonparametric analogs of their parametric counterparts according to the strength of the collected data. Applied Statistical Designs for the Researcher discusses three varieties of the Student t test, including a comparison of two different groups with different variances; two groups with the same variance; and a matched, paired group. It introduces the analysis of variance and Latin Square designs and presents screening approaches to comparing two factors and their interactions.

This volume contains selected papers from the ``Workshop on the Statistical Aspects of Water Quality Monitoring'', held on October 7-10 1985, at the National Water Research Institute in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. The prime objective of the Workshop was to generate interaction between the statistical community and scientists working in the area of Water Quality Monitoring. To this end, topics covered in this Workshop fall into two categories: (1) Methods Development, and (2) the Imaginative Application of Existing Methodologies. Subjects covered include: Time Series, Estimation of Loading, Clustering, Model Development, Censoring Data Analysis, Quality Control and Data Acquisition. In the ar...
