Primes of the Form x2+ny2 : Fermat, Class Field Theory, and Complex Multiplication. Third Edition with Solutions

This book studies when a prime p can be written in the form x2+ny2. It begins at an elementary level with results of Fermat and Euler and then discusses the work of Lagrange, Legendre and Gauss on quadratic reciprocity and the genus theory of quadratic forms. After exploring cubic and biquadratic reciprocity, the pace quickens with the introduction of algebraic number fields and class field theory. This leads to the concept of ring class field and a complete but abstract solution of p=x2+ny2. To make things more concrete, the book introduces complex multiplication and modular functions to give a constructive solution. The book ends with a discussion of elliptic curves and Shimura reciprocity...

Principles of Secure Processor Architecture Design

With growing interest in computer security and the protection of the code and data which execute on commodity computers, the amount of hardware security features in today's processors has increased significantly over the recent years. No longer of just academic interest, security features inside processors have been embraced by industry as well, with a number of commercial secure processor architectures available today. This book aims to give readers insights into the principles behind the design of academic and commercial secure processor architectures. Secure processor architecture research is concerned with exploring and designing hardware features inside computer processors, features whi...

Towards System Safety

Each year the Safety-critical Systems Symposium brings together practitioners and researchers in a quest to inculcate a higher degree of safety engineering into the development and operation of critical software-based systems. On this, the Symposium's seventh occasion, it explores recent work and experience which lead us further 'towards system safety'. This book of the Proceedings covers the entire event. The first paper is the course text of a tutorial run on the first day of the Symposium, included here to provide readers with a coverage of the entire event. The next fourteen papers were presented, on the second and third days, in six sessions: Safety Cases, Systems Engineering, Safety An...

Calculus

Calculus: Early Transcendentals, Binder Ready Version, 11th Edition strives to increase student comprehension and conceptual understanding through a balance between rigor and clarity of explanations; sound mathematics; and excellent exercises, applications, and examples. Anton pedagogically approaches Calculus through the Rule of Four, presenting concepts from the verbal, algebraic, visual, and numerical points of view. This text is an unbound, three hole punched version. Access to WileyPLUS sold separately.

Fundamentals and Standards in Hardware Description Languages

The second half of this century will remain as the era of proliferation of electronic computers. They did exist before, but they were mechanical. During next century they may perform other mutations to become optical or molecular or even biological. Actually, all these aspects are only fancy dresses put on mathematical machines. This was always recognized to be true in the domain of software, where "machine" or "high level" languages are more or less rigourous, but immaterial, variations of the universaly accepted mathematical language aimed at specifying elementary operations, functions, algorithms and processes. But even a mathematical machine needs a physical support, and this is what har...

On PL DeRham Theory and Rational Homotopy Type

The rational [bold]PL de Rham theory of Sullivan is developed and generalized, using methods of Quillen's "homotopical algebra." For a field k of characteristic 0, a pair of contravariant adjoint functors A : (Simplicial sets) [right arrow over left arrow] (Commutative DG k-algebras) : F is obtained which pass to the appropriate homotopy categories. When k is the field of rationals, these functors induce equivalence between the appropriate simplicial and algebraic rational homotopy categories. The theory is not restricted to simply connected spaces. It is closely related to the theory of "rational localization" (for nilpotent spaces) and "rational completion" in general.

Picture Processing and Psychopictorics explores the selected aspects of perception and picture processing involving variables that are relevant to psychopictoric research. This book is organized into four parts encompassing 18 chapters. The first three parts cover the three classes of psychophysical variables, namely, contrast and border, shape and geometry, and texture. These parts also deal with the factors that influence the detection of objects in complex images. The discussion then shifts to the role of these factors in perception, as well as the computer analysis and manipulation of images with respect to these factors. The fourth part describes the programming systems for online experimental design and image manipulation. This work will be of great value to psychologists concerned with determining how the human extracts information from visual stimuli and to computer scientist concerned with developing programs and equipment to extract similar information from images.
