The Intimidation Factor
What do we do when a formerly vibrant back-to-the-Bible movement drifts into a toxic swamp rimmed with attack dogs? Charles Redfern faces that grim question squarely. He discovers that American evangelical Christianity, which surged in the mid-twentieth century and offered a more genteel, intellectually vigorous alternative to caustic fundamentalism, fell into the hands of intimidators and backbiters. It was a short journey from there to the movement’s partisan sell-out and the abandonment of time-honored creeds. Redfern describes his own story, in which he came into the faith at the movement’s height in the 1970s, then views evangelicalism’s decay across its spectrum. He doesn’t spare conflict-adverse moderates in the process. But he also discovers hope: A winsome remnant survives, and its wooing the back-to-the-Bible people back to the Bible, bearing the fruits of the Holy Spirit as they do so.

He returns to Clinton where he is successful in his bid for a School Committ ee seat. He turns to another career as general counsel for a major state environmental agency where the latent sti rrings of religious vocati on surface and he decides to enter seminary. His journey then takes him to Northern Ireland where as an ordained priest of the Anglican Communion he serves in parishes, works with other Christi an churches, and does church development work. Throughout it all, Barbara pursues her interest in music and parti cipates in choirs and chorales and makes her own eff ort in the church to bring people together. Readers will laugh out loud at many of Gordon’s stories but they will shed tears as they share those last days of Barbara’s life.

Enhancing Data Systems to Improve the Quality of Cancer Care
One of the barriers to improving the quality of cancer care in the United States is the inadequacy of data systems. Out-of-date or incomplete information about the performance of doctors, hospitals, health plans, and public agencies makes it hard to gauge the quality of care. Augmenting today's data systems could start to fill the gap. This report examines the strengths and weaknesses of current systems and makes recommendations for enhancing data systems to improve the quality of cancer care. The board's recommendations fall into three key areas: Enhance key elements of the data system infrastructure (i.e., quality-of-care measures, cancer registries and databases, data collection technologies, and analytic capacity). Expand support for analyses of quality of cancer care using existing data systems. Monitor the effectiveness of data systems to promote quality improvement within health systems.
Calcium, Vitamin D, and Prevention of Colon Cancer
These proceedings were published as a result of a workshop sponsored by the Chemoprevention Branch of the National Cancer Institute. The workshop covered a range of topics including calcium and vitamin D in human nutrition; epidemiologic relationships betweencalcium, vitamin D, and colon cancer; the biology of calium and vitamin D at the tissue and cellular level; and enimal and human studies investigating the potential for prevention of colon cancer with calcium and vitamin D.
