This book illustrates a distinctive lineage of critical interventions in moving image culture and in the public sphere through the trajectories of a small number of film and video organizations established between the 1970s and the early 1980s in Western Europe and North America mainly by women and still operative today. The six case studies examined (Drac Màgic, Women Make Movies, Groupe Intervention Vidéo, Leeds Animation Workshop, bildwechsel, Centre Audiovisuel Simone de Beauvoir) have maintained a discrete yet continuing presence within an audiovisual industry and a cultural system dominated by institutionalized and corporate forms of production and distribution. Their longevity – quite a rarity in the independent circuit – makes a strong case for the sustainability of feminist/LGBTQ media activism in the public sphere, in spite of its low-key profile. This volume will be of interest to academicians of history and communication studies, feminist and LGBTQ topics, and gender-related cinematic culture.

Historically, character education has been an important aim of many universities. Yet, while the last few decades have witnessed increased interest in character education among children and adolescents, much less attention has been given to the formation of university students in the midst of a crucial period of intellectual and ethical development. Cultivating Virtue in the University offers insights into why educating character might be an important aim for universities and how institutions might integrate it in an increasingly global and pluralistic age. The book will interest scholars, faculty, staff, and administrators considering whether they might want to integrate character into their institutions as well as public audiences eager to explore the purpose of the university at a time when the future of higher education is under intense debate.
Addressing current trends in feminist historical and literary scholarship in relation to digital media, this book looks at how the field has developed since the first feminist archival research projects were initiated over twenty years ago. The contributions to the book explore three key concerns: projects which document the history of women’s political activism; the digitising of primary document archives by women; and the impact of digitisation on historical research about women. In addition, the book sheds light on the way in which historians and literary scholars fuse digital sources with traditional forms such as books and journal articles to imagine different and ground-breaking histories of women’s experience. With the field of feminist history and its relationship to the digital world in a dynamic position, the contributions to this volume can be read as signposts for future research in the field, posing questions for scholars and readers to explore in more detail.
