The two women found dead in their beds had been executed. There was no robbery, no sexual motivation. The satanic writings and red candles found at the scene had been staged to throw investigators off track. The killer, or killers, just wanted the women dead! One of them, Betty Lou Gray, had been the primary target, while the other, a close friend, had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time. From the beginning, the prime suspect had been Betty Lou's husband Bill. A dominating and controlling husband, he had kept his wife penniless and almost in bondage for 28 years until, finally, she'd had enough and asked for a divorce. The obvious motivation was money, a $250,000 life insurance policy, and with his wife dead there would be no splitting of assets in a divorce settlement. If he could succeed in hiding the insurance money and the pawnshop assets from his children, Bill Gray would become a rich man. It seemed an open and shut case, but it was not to be. In this true story, Dixie Murphy follows a trail of suspicion and intrigue, and reveals the virtually unprecedented means used to finally bring a murderer to justice.

Those who Can-- Teach!

Those who Can-- Teach!

Many successful people can point to a single teacher whose talent and dedication made a crucial difference in their lives. Sometimes former students clearly recall a teacher's casually brilliant remark that produced an instant "aha!" response; sometimes they are affected by a teacher's passionate devotion to professional duty. The methods of a great teacher are as varied and distinctive as teachers themselves, but the result - inspired teaching - is a gift enjoyed for a lifetime. Those Who Can . . . Teach brings together personal reminiscences about gifted educators from a wide array of contributors, including writers, entertainers, business leaders, religious figures, politicians - and of course teachers themselves. Some are humorous, others irreverent, others sweet, still others passionately polemical. Based on interviews conducted by the editors, the book includes many excerpts culled from literature, personal letters, and film.

Ethnic Women

Ethnic Women

This book introduces the study of ethnic women and contributes to our understanding of the relationships among gender, race/ethnicity, and social class. The social scientific study of gender has grown exponentially for more than two decades. Until recently, however, little attention has been paid to the diversity among women. The social scientific literature on ethnicity has experienced a revival in the same decades, yet women have frequently been overlooked or misrepresented in that literature. When ethnic women do appear they are typically depicted as selfless wives and mothers or passive victims. Theses twenty original essays challenge myths and stereotypes. The authors--social scientists, social service professionals, and other scholars--explore a broad range of racial/ethnic and social class circumstances. Communities represented include the Hmong in Wisconsin, Cuban Jews in Florida, and Samoans in Hawaii. Patters of immigration and social mobility, communal institutions, and maintenance of ethnic traditions are among the topics which reflect the multiple status reality of ethnic women.
