Managing and Mining Sensor Data

Advances in hardware technology have lead to an ability to collect data with the use of a variety of sensor technologies. In particular sensor notes have become cheaper and more efficient, and have even been integrated into day-to-day devices of use, such as mobile phones. This has lead to a much larger scale of applicability and mining of sensor data sets. The human-centric aspect of sensor data has created tremendous opportunities in integrating social aspects of sensor data collection into the mining process. Managing and Mining Sensor Data is a contributed volume by prominent leaders in this field, targeting advanced-level students in computer science as a secondary text book or reference. Practitioners and researchers working in this field will also find this book useful.

Changing Clothes in China

Historians have long regarded fashion as something peculiarly Western. In this surprising, sumptuously illustrated book, Antonia Finnane challenges this view, which she argues is based on nineteenth- and twentieth-century representations of Chinese dress as traditional and unchanging. Fashions, she shows, were part of Chinese life in the late imperial era, even if a fashion industry was not then apparent. In the early twentieth century the key features of modern fashion became evident, particularly in Shanghai, and rapidly changing dress styles showed the effects. The volatility of Chinese dress throughout the twentieth century matched vicissitudes in national politics. Finnane describes in detail how the close-fitting jacket and high collar of the 1911 Revolutionary period, the skirt and jacket-blouse of the May Fourth era, and the military style popular in the Cultural Revolution gave way finally to the variegated, globalized wardrobe of today. She brilliantly connects China’s modernization and global visibility with changes in dress, offering a vivid portrait of the complex, subtle, and sometimes contradictory ways the people of China have worn their nation on their backs.

Disability Law and Policy

  • Categories: Law

The disability law seeks to protect disabled persons from various forms of discrimination, increase measures for their effective participation and inclusion in society, and ensure equality of opportunity and adequate accessibility. The responsibility has been placed on the government to facilitate the rights of disabled persons such as the right to equality, dignity, and respect for their integrity, right to protection, right to live in a community, etc. The disability policy requires the private employers to frame an equal opportunity policy, appoint a liaison officer, identify posts for disabled persons, prohibit discrimination, and conform to accessibility norms. This book unravels the recent studies on disability law and policy. It picks up individual topics and explains their need and contribution in the context of a growing economy. This book will provide comprehensive knowledge to the readers.

I Want To See: Vision For The World

The book is about a global mission against world cataract blindness. It highlights the resistance of some world organizations to changes, particularly the shift from ICCE to ECCE with PCI, and how they have relented over the years. It also highlights the success of cataract/implant training centres in China, especially in Tianjin. The book will be of interest to anyone involved in providing eye care, and may be of special interest to those dealing with blinding diseases including cataract.
