Intracerebral Hemorrhage Hydrocephalus malresorptivus Peripheral Nerves
Advances in Neurosurgery presents the experience and research results of modern neurosurgeons confronted with urgent diagnostic and therapeutic problems. The first topic here is spontaneous intracerebral hematomas, whose localization determines the form of treatment and usually its outcome. Newer therapeutic approaches such as stereotactic removal, endoscopy and fibrinolysis supplement the results of standard operative methods. Secondly, the hydrocephalus malresorptivus is covered, presenting experience with the diagnostic value of intrathecal infusion tests, CT-cisternography, evoked potentials, and MRI CSF-flow studies, as well as aspects of neurosurgical intensive care such as barbiturate treatment, respiratory problems in head injury patients, auto-regulation mechanisms, and hospital infection. The last section is devoted to peripheral nerve surgery, reports on experience with microsurgery and various forms of anastomosis in both traumatic and tumorous nerve lesions.
The Making of Memory in the Middle Ages
Memory in the Middle Ages has received particular attention in recent decades; yet; the topic remains difficult to grasp and the research on it rather fragmented. This book gathers particular case studies on memory in different parts of medieval Europe and in a variety of fields including literatures, languages, manuscript studies, history, history of ideas, philosophy, social history and art history. Luther and German Humanism
The particular interest of Professor Spitz has been the close relationship and synergy between humanism and religious reform in the transformation of European culture in the 16th century. Within the general cultural and intellectual context of the Renaissance and Reformation movements, the present volume focuses on Luther and German humanism; a subsequent collection looks more particularly at the place of education and history in the thought of the time. The articles here discuss Luther's imposing knowledge of the classics, his attitudes towards learning, the religious and patriotic interests of the humanists, and the role of a younger generation of humanists in the Reformation. Also included is a far-reaching appraisal of the impact of humanism and the Reformation on Western history.

The twelfth-century vita of Saint Olav, the Norwegian King Olav Haraldsson, is an outstanding example of how the intersection of power and sanctity was politically functionalised in the Middle Ages. Olav’s hagiographic dossier is transmitted in several and in part newly discovered manuscripts. Its contents depend on both the Latin and the vernacular tradition, while the milieus in which it was used range from the clerics of the High Middle Ages to the Hanseatic merchants at the end of the epoch. Fourteen studies on language and style, on codicological as well as cultic and cultural context of individual copies of the Passio Olavi, on the veneration of Olav in Scandinavia, England, Northern France and Northern Germany, on the construction of sanctity, strategies of propagating Olav’s cult and their narrative realisation, and, finally, on changes of the text, its spread and usage are presented alongside the first critical edition of the complete dossier.
